How safe is Candlestick?

This is all totally ridiculous. Been to Atlanta and Carolina and very few problems if any. Good natured ribbing, that sort of thing.

What you are describing is utter shit. You should be able to walk into any stadium with any teams jersey and not fear physical violence.

If someone is reading this wanting to go to a non 49ers/raiders/eagles/redskins? Away game, please do so, it's awesome.

My wife and I went to a game a couple years ago. We will NOT return to the venue for any reason, even if it were the nfccg. The experience in the seats was ok, but there were plenty of fights around us. We had to take our colors off towards the end due to the hostility of the crowd. Leaving in neutral colors with California plates was a nightmare of drunk drivers and hooligans, even though we had no identifying markings. I would much rather watch a game on tv than return to candlestick.

I agree with those saying it shouldn't be like this but it is.... So kind of have to get over how it should be and realize how it is. As many states before and after is where there truly is a risk for serious stuff to happen.

Ask yourself - you are leaving, someone throws a beer at your wife and calls her a few really bad words - how are you going to react? Situations like that are where you can only lose. Take the fight and get pounded or feel like shit for a really long time.

I would not go and especially not in Seahawks gear and if you still go and in Seahawks gear have a way to put it out if sight when leaving the stadium (wife's handbag etc since I guess bag packs won't be allowed this season)

I blame the Village People. They're the ones that got the natives all fired up with all that macho macho man stuff. Punks.

Again its because of where the Stick is, cheap tickets, Raider fans, etc. I guarantee you that when the new stadium opens you will not see the same problems. The surrounding area is much better, ticket prices will be higher and the A'holes from Oakland are not going to drive all the way to Santa Clara, too far and an unfamiliar area to the rifraf.

I guess the easist way to explain this, especially to those of you that live in Seattle or the Puget Sound area is like this, think about what Hawk games would be like if you moved the Clink to Tacoma and cut ticket prices in half, you'd have your very own version of the Stick.

Though I am sad to see the Stick go because of all the fond memories, I am also glad to see it go because of the state it is in.

I highly doubt it...Tacoma is not even that bad. I'd say South Seattle is worse. Plus the Seahawks don't have the gang following of the Niners. You got Norteños, Pirus, bloods that all rep those colors

Give me a break, I was referring to 49ers fans being the perpetrators, lol. Blaming that crap on Raiders fans...

um...who was blaming the Raiders?

It is a FACT that its worse when the Niners play the Raiders and it is a FACT that they no longer play in the preseason because of it.

I didn't say it was all Raider fans fault, but the TWO fanbases together is a bad combo.

Ya...saw that after. I wasn't blaming them tho.

It is funny tho...there is some truth to it that alot of Raider fans go to Niner games. I have some friends who are huge Raider fans and make fun of the Niners at every turn...yet I keep seeing pictures of them on FB at Niner games. LOL. Thats kinda sad because the Raiders are perenially blacked out because they can't get people to go to their OWN games.

Still tho, that is a pretty low % of the fans in the building. Its Niner fans who are the problem....or more specifically, Niner fans who get cheap seats, show up at 10 AM for a 1PM kickoff and get drunk in the parking lot all day before entering the stands. The biggest problem is the price of the seats. It sounds really bad to say, but when they move to Santa Clara alot of these problems will go away because alot of the people going to the games will be priced out of the building.

I have 2 young sons (7 and 3). As it is now, I'd have to think twice about bringing either of them to a game. I HATE that. That isn't the way it was when they were winning championships. Thats a product of CHEAP tickets for a crappy building and a team that sucked for a decade.

I'm looking forward to the new venue because I expect alot of these issues to go away...plus its in a MUCH, MUCH better neighborhood.

I've been to Candlestick 2 times vs. the hawks. I got called names and stuff but nothing really that got under my skin. The seats are ok. But the stadium itself is a piece if crap. It's not too bad going there honestly.

Yup.

Was built as a baseball only stadium and wasn't even enclosed (the outfield was open to the elements). Since it was built for much smaller crowds, all of the corrodors around the stadium were built very narrow.

When they enclosed it, it didn't get much better.

The land for the stadium came from a dubious deal with the Mayor of SF (I think it was the mayor anyway), so while kinda picturesque and on the water...its also in a slum and 10-20 degrees colder than anywhere else in the bay area.

Essentially, Candlestick was a bad baseball stadium in a lowsy location that was "upgraded" and made into a football stadium. It was horrible from the start.

All of the sentiment from that place has 100% to do with the history in the building and NOTHING to do with the actual structure. The 49ers have NEVER had a proper place to play (even going back to Kezar)...so thats why so many of us can't wait till next year.

I'm really looking forward to going to the Hawks/Niners game at the new stadium next year. SF deserves better than Candlestick, and I think it's the parking lot and the slum that make Candlestick so unsafe and grotesque.

IMHO the key is your wife. I would not take my wife or daughter to that game. There are way to many things that could happen. The fact that you asked tells me your intuition is working. Listen to it. I am not a wimp nor am I paranoid. I am as you say you are, non confrontational, however mob mentality is not to be reasoned with. Not worth the risk in my book. Again wife being key.

I really hate it, but I tend to agree.

The only concern should be if the stands start falling apart (which is honestly a legit concern).

The only people who get into trouble are the people who pick fights with drunks... I'm hoping the new stadium will essentially price them out, so there will be much better atmosphere and less drunk, low-lifes.

I went to the championship game against the giants in 2011. My section had quite a few giants fans something like 30%, nobody seated during the entire game, the seats were wet because of the rain but I think anyway the crowd would have been stand up due to the tension of that game, I didn't hear any insult or incident during the whole game, there were even very few people drinking because nobody wanted to leave their seats to get a beer or piss at risk of missing any action. At the end 49ers lost and the stadium just became mute, no fights no insults just people leaving the stadium sad, a bunch of giants fans were celebrating in the parking lot and in the stands with the fox crew, nobody cared to insult them or pick a fight, it was such a blow for the 49ers fans that they were just devastated and wanted to go home and cry. I went out of the stadium and walked like 6 blocks in the dark to get the train, I admit that part was a little scary, but since there were quite a few people walking towards the station it wasn't a big deal.

Now is different story on preseason games or when the outcome of the game doesn't matter so much, then you have more people that just go there to get drunk and cause trouble and doesn't care about the game, the tickets being cheaper also helps.

I was going to go to a game last season but after talking with some people on another message board and hearing about how unsafe it can get I decided not to.

Best of luck to you.

Can't say I agree with this. A lot of drunks look for fights to pick.
Beat me to it
