Okay, sorry for the melodramatic subject line. I'm just kidding. Seriously. No tomatoes please.
However, that was just plain godawful by anyone's standards, I don't care who you are. Outside of a few bright spots (Michael, our run D) this is one we would like to quickly forget.
I just hope the players don't any time soon.
It can be said that these types of games are perfect headed into the regular season, especially a young, talented team with the hype the 2013 Seahawks have. They tend to knock you back down a few pegs as if to say, "Don't believe the hype, boys. Ya still have to show up and play outstanding football." The team as a whole looked like garbage. Yes, like I said, there were some bright spots but when you look at the collective, it's hard to get too jacked and pumped over any individual stand out play.
Russell Wilson looked human. More so than ANY game I have seen him wearing a Seahawks uniform - preseason or otherwise - and I'm trying to decide if that's a good thing. Our expectations have been driven by evidence to the point that he's just missing a halo over his head and a Book of Russell that can be perused over ad nauseum by his countless, devoted followers. It's okay to remember that he is in fact a human being, despite what Moffitt says. Finer football minds than mine like kearly and others, can no doubt uncover some of the reasons for his struggles tonight but I think I'm okay with the fact that Russell Wilson didn't look like Our Lord And Franchise Saviour, but rather a qreat quarterback on-the-rise who simply had an off night in August.
Our starting OL looked like shit. There. Is that astute enough analysis for you? Where's my barf icon.
Is Sweezy the next Whitehurst in terms of rare failed experiments by this otherwise badass coaching and GM regime? Clearly it's too early to tell but signs insist on pointing gently towards the crappy side of things. This experiment has me on edge more than any other right now. Yes he has athletic ability and a ceiling higher than Moffitt but personally I'm not looking forward to any moment in the regular season where Moffitt is eating a bag of Doritos watching ESPN Primetime and getting a good chuckle at our expense.
The penalties are the MOST troubling to me. Coming off of a penalty-laden game against Denver, there can be no doubt the coaches stressed more disciplined play for this game. Instead? It was an abomination. Were the refs flag happy? I would say no doubt. Still, there's enough evidence here to convict the Seahawks in a court of law that some seriously sloppy, penalty-inducing plays took place. The refs might of had some secret bet that he who pulls the most flags wins, but there was cause to do so at least 60% of the time in my estimation. The refs don't get off the hook as they sucked BAD but if Holmgren were dead I would say he is surely rolling over in his grave. How much of this is due to the "player's coach" mentality that Pete brings to the franchise? I don't argue with the success his style of coaching brings, but it behooves me to mention there is a double-edged sword to that style and it manifests in the form of sloppy, penalty-rich play.
Like I said, I will let the finer football minds like kearly help us off the ledge (or force us to jump, let's wait and see) but these 44-year-old eyes still bring 20/20 vision to the table.
Yes it's preseason. Yes we have a lot of starters out. Yes we are playing vanilla, etc, etc, etc...
But when a team as good as ours looks as bad as they did, it's only human to question things. Like Russell Wilson. Human.
Well, until the regular season starts that is.
