hiring a college OC may have been a mistake...

I mentioned this in another thread, but not only are we in Shotgun at one of the highest rates in the league, we also run play-action (from under center or shotgun) at one of the lowest rates.

Put those two things together and we have one of the most predictable pockets in the NFL.

Defenses already know what's coming. Will they adapt during the bye week, or same old formations the league has already seen on film?

I don't know if this is Grubb getting a reality check on how the NFL works versus College, but I would hope that with the remainder of the year, or if he's still around next year, that he washes his old playbook and has an actual NFL playbook in mind.

I would imagine a sweet number to be in is 60%-70% of your plays be shotguns and the rest under center.

It's way too soon to say if it was a mistake. Keeping the turnstile bradford instead of the draft pick seems to be a genuine mistake

Now it looks like a mistake to have a rookie coach with a rookie OC. Obviously mm's the dc and is a pro there - our defense is getting better every game.

Thanks for posting this.

Its easy to blame the O line entirely for our worst, or say Geno just isnt great. Truth of the matter is our entire offense, depsite how electric it can be, is operating in a one dimensional fashion. And our play calls, our lack or a run game, our scheme across the o-line... those things are the primary reason we are struggling.

Geno is putting up really solid numbers despite being challenges more than helped but Grubbs scheme and Huffs line philosophy.

Either it shifts now coming out of the bye, or we can expect the rest of the season to be more of the same, or worse.

There's only so much we can run in the limited sets we do without a viable run game or strategy to put the o line in a better position to succeed.

Schlereth is exactly right. The o line is being handicapped by Grubbs style. The constant reliance on shotgun places undue pressure on the one position we are most vulnerable - Tackle.

We dont fix it and the tight windows Geno threads will get smaller and the league leading pressure rate we are giving up will continue.

Wonder if Mark would ever consider coaching...

This isn't just a Grubb issue. Macdonald said he wants to operate out of the shotgun. He mentioned it on that radio station. That's part of his philosophy, coming from a Ravens system that's been in the top 5 in shotgun snaps for the past half decade.

Sounds like 2 coaches trying to force a system rather than adapting to the team they have.

Even if they were hell bent on forcing a way of playing on a team and willing to push through a few years of rebuilding, it doesn't make a ton of sense for them in the short-term to ignore what they can and should do in favor of what they know, what the are familiar with and what they want to do.

Would still like to see what he could do with even a serviceable line.

Lamar is a threat to run every time he touches the ball. Geno, not so much. Plus their o-line is better than ours.

Hope Mac learns to be more dynamic, instead of having a rigid philosophy that doesn't maximize the players he has on the field.

But Grubb was an OL coach and he brought his own OL coach to the Hawks, our line is bad, coaching could be part of the reason why it's bad?
Could be. I'm not ruling anything out. I wish they'd bring in consultants to help with scouting and coaching.

While nobody will confuse Geno for Lamar in the open field, Geno is surprisingly quick for his age. In fact, I wish he WOULD use his legs more.
Geno was a 4.55 sec guy many years ago at his combine, but he could still hit 20mph+ today, not bad for an 'old' guy.
