Has Greg Olsen been worth the $7 mil. contract?

He did great on the onside recovery,as for being
out there?I see he misses on a lot of targets like
maybe the game is passing him by which is very
possible.I think there is better options at TE as far
as receiving goes..Not worth 7 mil by far.

If you cornered me I'd say it seems to be a lot of money for production so far. But the season isn't even close to being over with yet. I'll pass on judgment until more games are in. Even the wise can not see all ends (quoting Gandalf).
If say...in the final game of the season, Olsen makes a tough clutch catch for a TD that gives us HFA through the playoffs...I'd be much happier about the whole deal.....lol...

Also...wouldn't it depend on what a team is comfortable paying for at a certain position?...To me...if PC/JS think the dollars invested in that position as a total is okay...then I am good with it also.

He's a one-year rental. In addition to providing insurance against Dissly getting hurt again, he adds some maturity, and doesn't make silly mistakes. The onside kick was a good example --he knew the rules and didn't panic. If Parkinson is all that, he'll move up to the team next year. But I'm fine with Olsen this year.

He’s good injury insurance. And that’s about it. If there was a cheaper FA TE on the market with Olsens savvy then we missed out. But I suspect there wasn’t.

I’m more pissed about the money are paying Hollister.

He can block and that's what TEs are supposed to do (as well as catch). Neither Hollister or Willson are very good on the line of scrimmage.

$7m is a lot for mediocre player. He does perhaps bring some guidance into the locker room with young group we have (overall). With the roster budgets being what they are IMHO he is not worth it. If he was a missing piece then sure but the staff we already had IMHO could fill in well enough if not better. There was a play today in the end zone where Russ thew the ball high expecting him to jump for it and he didn’t. He feels like the old guy squeezing his last paychecks out of the league before he hangs up his cleats. He seems uninspired.

To date, NO, not worth $7M. The season is young. Will Dissly is still healthy. Jacob Hollister is healthy also. Now Colby Parkinson is able to play again. Honestly, the $7M might be better invested in defense.

But, it is what it is, and Olsen has played like a $3M player, like a Hollister. His real value may be mentoring Colby Parkinson, getting him to an NFL-quality player so we can underpay him for the next 3 years.

IF Olsen comes up with a big play in the playoffs that gets us to the big game, I think we'll all look at it like KC trading for Frank Clark, and getting to the Super Bowl. Expensive, but worth it.

I noticed on DK's RAC TD reception, it was Dissly and Hollister in the game, and both made *sweet* blocks on DBs to spring DK on that TD run. No idea if Olsen taught them any of that, but it was a thing of beauty to behold, I'd say especially Hollister's block, and avoiding a holding call, but both blocks were key.

I just don't know who else we would've gotten. I think of we didn't have him we'd need Dissly to do more which means he'd be on IR right now probably.

At this point, no, but I think his experience and savvy will pay dividends down the stretch and in the playoffs.

Make sure to frame this in proper context. He was signed before they drafted Parkinson and when Will Dissly was only a couple months into rehabbing his 2nd season ending injury.

ding ding ding, we have a winner.

Another hindsight thread, just like the BJ Finney thread from last week. Olsen was a dependable veteran that was available for a good price to come in and anchor a healing thin TE group.

Sure now that Dissly is healthy, Parkinson's back and Hollister's played well, Olsen is probably expendable. But he sure wasn't in March.

I also think Greg Olsen provides a threat that helps keep the Lockett/Metcalf duo just as dynamic as they are. Most teams don't have to give a rats ass about unproven Dissly and Hollister. But Greg Olsen they do need to give him respect on the defense which makes it that much harder to cover Lockett and DK...now is he worth 7M? Maybe not, but Dissly as others have said has had injury issues...so I don't blame them.

Grown men concerned with another mans earnings. I wish the NFL wouldn’t release contract numbers. Funny how some are stoked with underpaying players and upset when “overpaying”. I personally think salary caps artificially hold individuals down. A lot of great potential GM’s on this forum...

I liked the one year deal and I think his impact comes in ways we don’t get to see and the Hawks TE group will be better long term due to his time here.

Also no one's mentioning one of the benefits of having a veteran like Olsen in that film room, a decade of knowledge helping these young TE's learn how to work and learn......of which Olsen is legendarily known for.

Is Olsen worth his contract? Talk about this after the playoffs... Way to early to decide that... when playoff time comes they want someone like Olsen around...

Nope, he hasn't contributed much at all, certainly not 7mil worth.
