The USMNT is above average, ranked #19 in the world right now (out of 207), meaning it is in the 90th percentile of world football. It's pretty hard to compare to the NFL, but I'd say they're a team like the Bears or Saints. They can play with anyone and win on any given day - if the bounces go their way - however there are teams out there that are better player-for-player and have the star power to turn a game on it's head real fast.
It would be easier to compare to college football actually. Picture them as a Wisconsin or Notre Dame. Always in or near the top 25 and can play with anyone on their good days, but lack the star power and overall talent to be elite.
those rankings are completely meaningless. Seriously, anyone who pays attention to the world rankings doesn't really know about football. The USMNT are nowhere near the top 10% of world football. Not even close. The fact is they play a lot of shit teams in this region.
In the world cup, the USMNT will be doing well to qualify out of their group, but anything above that would be absolute gravy. They're not even close to winning a world cup, or even making it past the quarter finals.
