Straight up I am a Duck homer, with that being said....

Unger got his ass kicked on these boards when he was first drafted, and then when he started. The amount of Unger hate was huge.

Now he is in the running for one of the biggest losses this team could have (see other thread.)

Ironic.

PS: I am pre-gaming hard. :D :thirishdrinkers:

Nothing going on. It's a reference to the thread about which future (trade or drop due to salary cap issues) loss will be the hardest to take.

Let's not ignore the somewhat obvious fact that Unger was not good at the guard position. And being a Ruskell pick didn't leave much hope for him.

..Which goes to show how good our coaching is now, really.

Thanks.
I hope we don't lose him. I feel he does a great job. It would be a huge loss with him gone.

Hey, i'm the biggest Ducks homer on this board, and I wasn't real stoked about Unger either. Glad he proved me wrong!

Nick Reed on the other hand... that kids going to be a beast!!!

I don't remember Unger really getting skewered here or anywhere else. I think he came into the draft as the man who was good at many positions having played tackle, guard, and center during college, but the master of none. I figured there would be a learning curve. It was just a matter of him settling into a position for more than one year. If anything, Chris Spencer was getting ripped on from draft day until the day he left.

I remember when Unger was on the Ruskell team, he was playing guard, then benched, then practically booted. Everybody (including many of us) that for sure he was a bust.

Along came the Pete and John show, and they immediately put him in as center. 'Course, Cable helped a great deal, but what vision these two have. The rest, as they say, is history...

Hmmm, I guess I thought he was hurt and was a typical offensive lineman and wasn't ready to be a beast yet. It's not like Robbie Tobeck was a superstar from day 1. Chris Gray was a journeyman that had a pretty good stint here. Sean Locklear was a last second tackle replacement (actually an undersized/lanky guard) that helped lead us to a Superbowl. I think people who expect offensive linemen to come in and dominate immediately think there are more Walter Jones types than not. In truth guys like him are once every 15 years at best.

You sure about that, Alanis?

I don't laugh out loud often... but when I do, it's a good thing. Thank you for this. Awesome. :)

I distinctly remember some serious Unger hate for awhile until people moved on to the next whipping boy. It was pretty bad for awhile.

I'm not denying it happened. It was probably on one of my self-imposed exiles. I tend to get plenty of people angry with me and I leave for months at a time. I'm just surprised it happened, as he is kind of the "local kid makes good" story, and I thought everybody saw him as I did... a work in progress. I saw him play as a jack of all trades in college and thought he'd settle in as an NFL player when he got his chance to just get one position down. I guess some others didn't, but I'm sure some of the Duck fans did, since they watched him excel in college as well.

Good thing we have a patient duo running things now when they see that spark of potential. They aren't afraid to cut ties with a guy in 30 seconds, but they also will run with a guy as long as possible that has long-term upside.

I remember people freaking out because they weren't resigning Spencer!
I was thrilled when they drafted Unger!
Second best center in the draft behind Mack.
And then they played him at guard.
While the unabated delayed pass rush continued to stymie Spencer!
Max is a great Seahawk...
Not many teams can say the have a pro bowler at the position.

Ditto. Relentless and unwarranted.

Lol I remember back in the day starting a thread asking "why dont we move Unger back to center like he played in college?"

Of course some of the know-it-alls on the board were like "Well.... that wont work at all because of A, B, and C"
