I hear what you are saying but it's not like Sam was running for his life. His first pick, he slid left and was fine and decided to fall back and throw the ball off of his back foot. He could have just kept rolling left.

The one where he got blasted- sure, it was a missed block. But it was right in his face and he just stood there and tossed it up. I mean if the expectation is that he needs to be able sit back there and read a book with his blanket every game, that's unrealistic.

And again, it's not like it's the first time. He brain farted unnecessarily against the Texans and did some idiotic, unforced stuff against the Cards as well.
I guess we just saw it differently.

Pick #1. Olu was pushed into his lap, which moved him off his spot. Had he a clean pocket to set his feet, maybe the ball is not underthrown.

Pick #2. Instant pressure in his face when no one picked up the block, leading to bad decision making.

Pick #3. Pass pro seemed ok here. Should have hit the guy underneath instead of trying to force it.

Pick #4. Jump pass out of a collapsed pocket. Yea that was ugly.

Not saying these weren't Sam's fault because he still could have made better decisions, but the pressure definitely affected these plays.

Back to original post. I like what he said. It is also a pro player mentality. Macdonald even said as much after Brock & Salk played him the clip. Players are not looking to assign blame in a good culture. They are looking inward to see how they can improve themselves. EJ made a going point by saying he (Sam D) is the reason they have been in every game this season. He laid an egg and nobody will deny that but EVERYONE has had bad days. All the great QB’s have had multi pick days. Nature of the beast. Let’s support the guy instead of trying to tear him down. The fans are not contributing to him getting confidence back. Lets be 12 as 1.

This game the lambs had a game plan to go after Olu, and it worked. Ask any QB what pressure they hate the most, and its right up the middle. We did the same to Stafford that's why he didn't play lights out like he always does. After Williams hit him he didn't want any part of that. Sam played poorly very poorly but in the end when it mattered most he drive the team down from the half yard line to give this team a chance to win. Some on this forum were praising Geeenooooo for doing the same last year saying he gave them a chance to win at the end.

Sam saw the ghosts before the game ever started. If you get a chance watch him in the pregame warmups. This was a big game, bigger than usual. Maybe there is something to that for Darnold. He sure was feeling the wrong stuff. Ghosts can do that to a guy.
BUT, that pass Darnold threw to NJS on the left sideline...the one that was slightly overthrown but was caught one handed anyway, was in and of itself worth the price of admission. A thing of beauty.

Guess you better pick another team to root for. Darnold is going to be here awhile.
Oh he'll be here for two years for sure, if only because John Schneider won't be dumb enough to take a first round QB in this swirling hole of an upcoming draft.

But if you're that sold on the Andy Dalton route - five straight years of Wild Card round losses while passing up first round QBs every year out of sunk cost fallacy - then there's a good chance you'll get what you want.

He might improve. I was actually impressed with a few things he did yesterday.

But eventually, every playoff campaign comes down to a handful of third-and-longs in which only the QB can come through. Sam does not look ready to win a game like that, much less three or four straight.

Are you sure?

I don’t know where people are getting this from. Here are the numbers

Darnold
2025 - 10
2024 - 12

Smith
2025 - 13
2024 - 15

Darnold only had 6 INTs going into the game against the Rams. That’s .67 per game. Was Sunday an aberration or a pattern? Time will tell. Let’s take care of business between now and the next Rams game and see what happens.

On #1, you never throw off your back foot. Take a sack instead. 100% on him, whether Kupp was held or not.

#2, Bradford blocks the wrong guy. Darnold hangs in there and takes the shot, which sometimes you just have to do, but the defender arrives 5 milliseconds too soon and the ball flutters. Chalk that up to the chaos that comes from facing a strong defense.

#3, several pundits have said that this was a predetermined play and Elijah Arroyo ran the wrong route.

#4, that was bad.

So I give him a 50% on the picks.
