He is putting up a clinic against the Colts (4 passing and 1 rushing TD). Who would've thought?
I would say that's most QBs aside from a select fewI admit I didn't like the move to get Howell in place of Lock. Always believed he has it in him to be a good QB. But he isn't going to be able to carry a team that can't surround him with good help.
Lock can't carry a team, either. Yeah, Howell came in and looked like garbage in his first snaps this year--but so did Lock. Coming into this game, Drew Lock was in 4th place of 4 QBs to play for the Giants this year on a roster of Daniel Jones, Tommy DeVito, Tim Boyle, and himself.I admit I didn't like the move to get Howell in place of Lock. The thing is, who is backing up the QB now? How much could we have gotten in a trade for him, or having Lock and the benchwarmer we have now? My goal as a fan is to watch great football, and find a team or players to hang my hat on. I am starting to see that with the Hawks, but it is not DK, Geno, or our reborn RB who flashes but breaks like balsa wood. Trade all three, and lets get to building a team. Keep Lockett if he wants to play REAL cheap, but BUILD THE TEAM. Buffalo, Detroit, Philly and even GB, those are teams to watch if you want to root. I can identify with those players as well as ones playing in my closest city. I'll never know any of them, so I pull hard for teams that play hard and play well the vast majority of the time. The Hawks are much like the Mariners, except they had 3 seasons in a row, 5 seasons where you could see IT. That is not much in 48 years, for an old old old old fan...71... no time to waste on bad football.Lock can't carry a team, either. I'm thoroughly of the belief that Howell and Lock are of essentially equal caliber, but Howell is younger and cheaper and was thus an 'upgrade' for a backup QB.
Good for Drew, though. He tied some sort of record with Eli Manning for a Giants QB performance, and this was a good victory in the final two weeks of the season. I'm sure New York's planning to draft a QB, though, so I don't really know where Drew fits into their plans next year at this point.
Honest question, what has Geno done the last couple years that made you say "Yep, he's the one"? As fans, shouldn't we want the next season to be better than this season?GeNOs, start drooling:
Enjoy next year's one two punch of Sam Howell and soon to be signed Drew Lock.Honest question, what has Geno done the last couple years that made you say "Yep, he's the one"? As fans, shouldn't we want the next season to be better than this season?
Well of course it could get worse, but at least there is hope for upside? I for one would love to come into the red zone and think we actually have a chance lolEnjoy next year's one two punch of Sam Howell and newly signed Drew Lock.
1 td, 4 ints, sub 50 ratingBefore getting too carried away now do his numbers from the 3 previous games
There you go, I have predicted that Hawks will not bring back Geno for one single reason: Hawks can sell HOPE with a 36 yo QB.Well of course it could get worse, but at least there is hope for upside? I for one would love to come into the red zone and think we actually have a chance lol
Honest answer (even though I'm not toffee): In 2022, Geno was just outside of the top 5 QBs in the league by performance.Honest question, what has Geno done the last couple years that made you say "Yep, he's the one"? As fans, shouldn't we want the next season to be better than this season?
Thank you for your logical analysis. I am not as brainy, so I shall repeat this car analogy:Honest answer (even though I'm not toffee): In 2022, Geno was just outside of the top 5 QBs in the league by performance.
Did we have a good offensive line? No, we had an 'ok' one. Did we have a good running game? No, we had a bad one. We had literally one aspect to our offense, which was Geno Smith throwing the ball. I love our WRs/TEs (even in 2022), but they haven't been great at YAC.
So, we were literally one dimensional, relying on a QB who hadn't been a starter in forever... and we were a top 10 offense.
This is why all the 'Yeah, Geno can be great if you surround him with elite everything, but even a HS QB could do that!' stuff is such nonsense. We've never surrounded him with 'elite' anything.
All Geno needed for a great season was a mediocre offensive line and his receivers not to drop the ball. (In addition to being bad at YAC, our receiving corps was also merely 'ok' at generating separation... but their drop rate was superb that year).
In 2023, we still had a bad running game, our offensive line got worse, our receivers developed a bad case of the dropsies, and we still had 'Geno please play well' as the only dimension to our offense... and we were still a top 10 offense.
I'm not saying Geno is our future. Dude is 34. I'll let Mike Mac and John Schneider determine to what degree you want to pay for a guy who's going to be on the wrong side of 35 before you know it. The idea of bringing Geno back is not clearcut whatsoever. (In addition to his age, the cost of QBs, how the NFL draft looks like it's shaping up, what kind of commitment Geno wants, we also have decisions about Grubb and to determine how close we are to being 'competitive' that impact this decision...)
But I wouldn't be upset if he came back and if anything, I'd take it as a positive sign that Macdonald has serious plans to compete for the playoffs next year.
