Before we traded Frank Clark our main issue was getting more pressure on the QB, or at least I thought it was?

Now that the draft has ended, not one DE was selected and the URFA's signed I'm left wondering why we didn't do more about addressings this glaring need.

Is it just me? What do you think? :stirthepot:

It's a worthy question, and in one of the post-draft interviews, a reporter asked the same thing.

The answer was that the draft was stage 2 of the 4-stage draft/free-agent team-building process, but that they were still working to address the issue.

Now, will it be solved to our satisfaction? Will we have quality edge rush? The middle already looks better, certainly. I think they hope to see Green step up more this year with solid interior play. Who else? I don't know.

L.J. was listed at the combine as a DT. I realize he will be replacing F. Clark as a DE which is a down grade due to his youth and inexperience at the postion.

Which leaves us in a worse postion then when we started. I would of thought that they should of addressed the DE postion before the start of the fifth round. But not at all ??? Crazy !!!

I think they addressed the latter issues quite well. Pressure on QBs throwing to wide open receivers 8 yards off the LOS within 2 seconds of the snap is a fallacy anyways.

Are we assuming that Collier is not going to be an effective pass rusher? Most every highlight I see of him he's playing DE and he looks to get pretty consistent pressure. There are stats showing he was near the top of FBS DL's in beating his blocks and getting pressures on passers... :?:

I'm not sure any of the DEs available at the Hawks draft position would come in and make an immediate huge impact on pass rush. If we were ever expecting to replace Clark's production, as well as improve the pass rush in general immediately, this year's draft was likely never going to do that.

If you listened to Pete and John, they mentioned that there was a historic run on DL this draft.. thought it was a deep class the good ones were dried up relatively quickly. They will address this in the 3rd phase of free agency and with undrafted free agents and before we mock undrafted un free agents remember Michael Bennett was an undrafted free agent. Poona Ford has worked out so far as well.

They sort of added to our defense back field.
They didn't do enough for pass rush.

Somewhat regretful as this draft was supposed to be deep in DL players.

Two things concerning pass rush, last years Rookies will have added weight and be expected to step up this year, to us they are a question mark but Pete and John have seen them where we have not so I can trust they have improved themselves at least physically since the end of the season.

Secondly I think we have wink and nod deals pending with some guys after the may 7th deadline. it has changed from previous years since there used to be 3 cut down dates before the season and now it's just one, harder to assimilate someone into your team in 3 days if you include the window for not being claimed. They also used to cut veterans early as a chance to catch on with someone else. I guess we will see how much this happens going forward.

We will add at least 2 guys I am thinking though.

That's right. Jacob Martin, in particular, struggled at maintaining his weight during 2018. I wouldn't be surprised if Jacob Martin weighed in 20 pounds heavier. Rasheem Green, reportedly, has been working at increasing his strength as well.

That explains why we weren't aggressive in drafting DEs, or any pass rush specialists. I guess Pete and John felt like rookies would need time to mature, few are instant big time contributors, and yet the team is ready to compete now. So they are better off signing veterans for this season, hoping Collier and Green would be ready by next season.

There were a plethora of good defensive lineman, but just not as many "Frank Clarks" as what many seemed to assume. Most of the ones that would have fit our defense went before we could pick.

2. It generally takes lineman (defensive and offensive) 2-3 years to realize their potential in the NFL. It's very rare to find a lineman that makes an impact his rookie year. So if you're trying to win now it actually makes sense to stick with the guys going into their 2nd or 3rd seasons that you already have because they will likely already be more impactful than a rookie would be. That and bringing in select veterans which they've alluded to already.

There's nothing saying that they're completely done with adding players to the team. Give it until minicamps start to see if they add anyone like Ansah or Suh.
