As a country that wants to dominate the world having the moniker world champions seems about right...the Ticats of Hamilton could probably beat the Jets and Browns..

So my wife keeps viciously flaming and raging at me for proclaiming the Seahawks as "World Champions" after our Super Bowl victory.

She says the NFL only has teams in the USA and that the SB is not a world championship.

I try to explain that since this is the highest level of the sport it indeed does serve as a world championship because international prospects would play at the NFL if they were to reach the highest level (an example being our incredible Aussie punter!)

Also most Super Bowl rings literally have "WORLD CHAMPIONS" inscribed on them (see pic of our 48 ring below. most teams get this put on their rings).

So what do you say dot net? Can you settle this debate with my wife for me? Are we world champs or not?

They've had that very same debate in baseball for eons, i.e. the "World Series". But in baseball's case, there are other countries besides the US that play baseball and have for decades, with Japan being the most prominent.

They probably should come up with another term, such as universal. But while "World" may not be completely accurate, it's been used for so long that everyone knows what it means, making the debate pointless.

It's interesting how they came up with the term "Super Bowl." It didn't start out with that name. The very first "Super Bowl" was called the AFL-NFL Championship game. The term "Super Bowl" didn't enter the lexicon until a year or so later when Lamar Hunt, the founder of the AFL and owner of the KC Chiefs, saw his kids playing with a "Super Ball", a tennis ball size dense rubber ball that could bounce 30-40' high if you slammed it on pavement and thought the name would be catchy.

You're both right and wrong.

While there is no real rival league that could challenge the NFL, you generally don't refer to someone as "world champion" when the competition was really just relegated to one country because only one country really does that thing.

Example: if China had a game that is only played in China, they wouldn't call themselves world champions, they would call themselves the champion of the sport or the champions of China.

Saying "NFL champions" is probably the most correct way. You can't argue against either component.

Being the fact that there are players designated on rosters from countries outside of the USA on teams within the USA playing Football in The USA and other countries with the new desires of the NFL commissioner, The term World Champions does apply to my thinking.

Oh come on now...
"World Champions", "World Series" We can call it whatever we want, in fact whatever we damn well want. Please stop with the over thinking and trying to manufacture a problem.
There is no harm in it and no reason to fabricate a make believe problem for the reasons we can't talk about in here.
I would also add that I am against expanding NFL teams to foreign countries and have pertinent reasons for that position.

So, until someone knocks us off our perch in the next Super Bowl, or maybe an intramural team from Alberta, New Zealand or some other far off corner of the world challenges us & wins.

We are and will be:

*WORLD CHAMPIONS*

Maybe Canadians might say we are not "World" Champions on the basis that football is not hockey...
But we are indeed World Champions until someone in the next Super Bowl knocks is off our lofty perch.
I wouldn't argue with her though, the smart ones know the wife is always right. lol
I don't know how many times I have to say it - but Canada is no longer in charge of The Hockey.
It looked like a fun game, we tried it and liked it - so we took it from them. Because we are nice we let them still have some teams.

Also NFL Superbowl win is 100% the World Championship - go ahead and send your best team - Grey cup winner or whatever and FAFO.
But first you have to play and beat the FBS champs - then you get to play the worst team in the NFL (I'm looking at you Raiders) to see if there is any need to move forward with what would clearly be a colossal waste of time.

The Klingons and Romulans approve this message. The Ferengi are still asking the Grand Nagus for methods of making more gold-pressed-latinum off this subject and how to Merchandize it.

Only 1 NFL in the world! And the Seahawks are world champions at that...Who cares what your wife thinks. You and everyone here knows our team are world champions.

The Super Bowl winners are world champs, until and unless another league challenges the super bowl winner to a game.

And yet in the parade they keep referring to them as world champions and on the rings
