JS had been following Russell Wilson since his earliest days at NC State, long before Bevell joined Seattle in 2011.

Not really, no. That is a myth that seems to be gaining steam. First off Wilson left to pursue a baseball career (he was drafted) and he was on nobody's radar as a real possible candidate for a starting NFL QB position. He returned a year later and chose to go to Wisconsin who was in need of a great QB. Schneider visited the campus in October of 2011 where players and coaches started to talk to him about Wilson and how great he was. You can read it here:

By now, there is a mythology that Schneider had been watching Wilson intently since his freshman or sophomore year, watching all his games. In reality, he saw a game or two on television when Wilson was at NC State, and honed his attention more in October 2011, making a campus visit to Wisconsin, when he began to hear nothing but sterling endorsements of the diminutive passer.

Also, Schneider and Carroll were really trying to land Peyton Manning who they knew was in Colorado and they were putting a lot effort into it:

Schneider was one of a handful of executives in regular contact with Manning's agent, Tom Condon, according to sources, including a meeting at the combine in Indianapolis -- at the height of the passive-aggressive media battle being waged between the quarterback and Colts owner Jim Irsay -- while Carroll was one of the coaches texting Manning directly and trying to woo him to Seattle as a free agent. So when the Seahawks discovered that Manning was on his way to Denver for a meeting with the Broncos, Schneider and Carroll jumped on Allen's plane and headed to Colorado.

"We were just thinking, 'How do we get his attention?'" Schneider said of the ill-fated recruiting trip. "And we wanted to take a shot. We felt like there was a little bit of a window, and we went for it."

Without a scheduled meeting, they never did get to talk to Manning, sitting in Denver on the plane for two hours before heading back to Seattle.

"They made it pretty clear they weren't going to meet with us," Schneider said.

With Wilson on Schneider's radar and Bevell watching every Wisconsin Badger game (he is an alum and a hardcore Badger fan), Wilson started to come into view as a real possibility, but they still had that "height" issue to address and they needed more film and to study him before they could even bring it to Carroll. Carroll had to approve the pick.

During the offseason, all staff members especially the HC and his coordinators do a lot of scouting. But as I have stated before, Wilson played at WI and that was Bevell's alma mater so he watched his every game. Schneider went to the Big Ten Championship game and was sold on him.

The rest is history and one of the best runs of drafting by a GM in Seattle history.

Bevell had nothing to do with it.

The truth lies somewhere in between with Bevell, Schneider and Carroll ultimately approving of the draft pick and giving him the starting job.

As far as Bevell goes, I am not an apologist, I just recognize that he is a pretty decent OC and you could do a lot worse. He gets a lot of production out of some very suspect talent. You disagree but I don't see you offering any alternatives to what you have now.

This is my last post on the subject as I am sure we'll never change each others views and a lot of good material has been laid out. Hopefully it was interesting to those that read it. It's a great discussion, carry on.

And yet the only evidence you can provide is a single quote taken out of context from an NFL training camp. (With no link.) Versus multiple sourced, and documented accounts it was Schneider, but you're right you have shown me the way those are "Myths & Legends". Bevell is the savior & hero this franchise deserves.

Actually Scott Fitterer (director of college scouting) had a lot to do with it as well. There are other people in the organization that help inform and advise the "visible" front office personnel. He was up for the Eagle GM position.
#splittinghairs

....but ....but Darrell Bevell.

According to the poster PackerNation you're wrong.

and i quote, PackerNation wrote - "Bevell scouted him and brought it to their attention about how good Wilson was."

The Seahawks personnel department had no interest in Russell Wilson. Until Bevell worked him out at his pro-day in 2012, and personally scouted him. Then Bevell sold them. and then JS agreed. LMAO.
He even provided non linked quotes from Wilson's pro-day, 1st NFL training camp, and everything.

If your a supporter of settling for 3 versus 7 then I want to play your team, I think there is a time and place for taking points, inside the 10 you should be scoring a lot more then 30 percent of the time with touchdowns, outside the 20 yes take the field goal, in the 4th quarter take the field goal to add pressure if your ahead.

We have a habit of driving to the 15 or 10 and then go into stupid mode with penalties and then long down and distance, we also have a habit of getting to the 5 and getting cute a lot of the time and then being forced to take a field goal.

Penalties are Bevell's fault?

I can actually point to a play that Bevell essentially caused a penalty and kept Seattle out of the endzone.

Against the Giants last year (you know the game where Seattle set a franchise record for rushing.)

Marshawn takes the ball all the way down to the 1/2 yard line. So it is 1st and goal from the 1/2 yard line.

The next play instead of just running their base stuff that had been working all game for an easy score. He gets into a formation they had not shown the whole season, with multiple shifts and what not. Of course an OLinenman false starts and the Seahawks inexplicable kick a field goal. After being 1st and Goal from the 1/2 yard line.

In other words Bevell got too cute.

*edit* Now I am going to have to watch the game again to give the specific details.* LOL

Seattle's 1st possession they had a 1st and Goal from just inside the 1 yard line. Seattle runs one of their most oft used plays. Shotgun Single Back Trips Zone Read, (but it's really just an inside zone to Marshawn play). Marshawn scores easily.

2:00 2nd Quarter: 3rd and Goal from the 2 same play as the last TD (inside zone) just from an Ace formation instead of Trips with Gary Gilliam in as a blocking TE. Touchdown. This is classic WCO philosophy where you run the same play, just with different formations and substitutions. The Giants don't have an answer to this play. LOL.

Okay finally we get to it. I got the details a little wrong, here is what happened.

6:19 3rd Quarter: 1st and Goal from the 6. Same play again, but out of 11 personnel. Inside Zone handoff Marshawn bounces it outside and takes it down to the 1/2 yardline.

2nd and Goal from the 1/2 yardline. Seattle gets in I formation with Gilliam in as a Blocking TE and motion him right, with Tukuafu as the FB. And run Iso Right for no gain.

3rd and Goal from the 1/2 yardline: PASS PLAY: Weak Left Slot: ( A formation they use just not a lot around the goaline.) Doug Baldwin motions from the Z to show end around action, The receivers on the left run a pick, and Marshawn Runs an out? The play never really got going due to the false start caused from all the motioning, and was frankly baffling. Why not keep milking that inside zone? The Giants had no answer to it. --> Bevell got cute. <--

*EDIT* (this was my opinion before watching the rest of the game. Now having watched the rest of the game I'm even more stunned.)

Further Commentary

Early 4th Quarter. The game tied 17 to 17. 2nd and Goal from the 3. Trips Right Inside Zone. TD. They can't stop that play. lolz

Mid 4th Quarter. 3rd and 3 from the 17. 2x2 wide stack formation. Inside Zone. Touchdown. Welp at least Bevell figured it out by the 4th quarter that they couldn't stop that play. LOL

After the Giants turn the ball over on downs at their 46. Seattle run an inside zone read to C-Mike out of 11 personnel for a huge gain down inside the 5.

5:25 4th Quarter. 1st and Goal from just outside the 1. Shotgun Single Back Trips Zone Read this time Russell Keeps for the TD.

Marshawn had 4 Touchdowns, all on inside zone read runs. Russell Wilson had 1 rushing TD keeping after the Giants desperately sold out to stop the RB on that play.

It turned into a laugher, but it was a 17 to 17 ball game in the 4th quarter. When Bevell finally adjusted and just ran Inside Zone Read almost exclusively in the 4th Quarter.

You re-watched the Giants game? LOL! I could respond to your silly post, but I'm laughing too hard.

Partly, partly Cables, and a large part on the players but it's coaching that gets those false starts and holds down. Holmgren had the least penalized team in the league, he had no tolerance for them.

A wide receiver should never be off sides or have a false start yet we seen them plenty, Okung can hear the snap count and still jumps, again should not happen.

Huh? "Okung can hear the snap count and still jumps..." This is Bevell's fault? Bit of a stretch, no? Receivers jumping off- side are the fault of the OC? C'mon Chris!

You complain about us not scoring in the Red Zone, you say we go into 'stupid mode' and you blame Bevell for that? C'mon.

What 'part' of jumping off-sides is Bevell's fault and why so?

Chris: You backed yourself into a corner here and I don't see how you're gonna get out of it. You yourself claim the majority of the penalties are on players and Cable. So why is it Bevell's fault

Is he not the one that selects the plays? Do they or don't they practice those plays for situations? Watching the ball is one of the first things you learn, cadence and inflection can be changed and if your disciplined you don't move. Thats on coaching, that's on working the plays and the staff and Bevell to make sure that stupid penalties don't happen and that adjustments are made. Cable works with the line, Bevell as OC needs to make sure that Cable and the WR coach as well as the players don't do stupid stuff and run the play correctly.

Or is it just Madden for Bevell and everyone else is responsible?

You cannot coach 'don't be stupid.' C'mon. And trying to use Holmgren as an example is silly...unless you think MH was a better coach than PC. How many SBs did MH win as a Seahawk?

Holmgren is a better Offensive coach then Pete, Pete is a better defensive Coach then Holmgren. That's not even a debate. The fact that certain plays require a player to get to a position against a defender to gain leverage to perform his task makes a player need to do different things on different plays, therefore not all plays require a player to try to get a jump.

Holmgren Coached mistakes out of our players on offense, that's documented as well based on we were one of the fewest penalized team in the league under his guidance.

Actually Mike won two, but on paper it shows as one, one in Green Bay and one in Seattle lest you forget the Pittsburgh fiasco.

If you guys want a reasonable dialogue, please stop insinuating that we have said that Bevell has never made mistakes. He has, as all coaches have. I'm not answering for anyone else, but it is my belief that he is the best fit for the job as an OC.
And I certainly don't use the measuring stick as has been suggested in this thread that Bev loses merit by not leaving the Hawks for a head coaching job. Maybe he likes it here. Maybe he sees great things ahead and wants to further be a part of that. Maybe he wants to continue his growth under the tutelage of the great Pete Carroll. All are great reasons to stay. He's still relatively young, so that other stuff could come later. Or, consider this, maybe he's being groomed to be the next head coach of the Hawks!

Yep, 26. Attention seekers employ illogical lists with semi-famous video clips that are completely detached from the subject matter.

He's our OC, personally think he's a blockhead, and am not especially fond of his calls on O and think he's not really as capable as the players he has make him look from time to time. Then there are moments when he should be axed as fast as he could be, and the team moves on to an OC who knows what he's doing situationally and knows the percentages of success, because there are times when it appears he sure doesn't.

For the record the call from the 1 in XLIX, was so galactically stupid it should have got him fired right after the game or shortly around then, and Bevell is lucky that PC took it on himself. I can't believe he got away with throwing one of him players under the bus when he called the play that ended the team's chances to win a consecutive SB, that move reflected his real character to me and isn't very flattering to him. I believe the team could do better.

Give me the link that he threw Lockette under the bus as you are bellyaching about. I know exactly what he said and it wasn't more than just saying the play was there if executed properly. But as in this case, so many parrots out there that distort the actual context of what was said. I guess it's more sludge from the tweet generation.

He said Lockette "could have went after it a little harder." Your memory seems selective in this case. I think Bevell was right about Lockette's execution, but whether he should have said it in public is another matter. When the personnel are in such a tight space, you have to go after the ball aggressively. No way Ricardo shouldn't have been the first guy to touch that ball. If he had, the pass would have fell incomplete as a worst-case scenario.

Congrats to Fadehawk's posts for making this thread nearly unreadable. How about less belittling comic relief and more substance.

*edit* You want me to cut out the .gifs? Wish Granted. :th2thumbs: (No belittling was intended)

These are just the responses I and other posters have been met with by Bevell defenders. From honest discussion, questioning, critiquing, presenting sited sources containing, audio, video, factual, or statistical information about Darrell Bevell and the Seattle Seahawks.

I'm just keeping a summary log to show their opinions. So Bevell defenders don't circle back to their old arguments, as you can see they keep inventing new ones, after they are refuted.

01. Darrell Bevell has only made 1 bad play call. (AKA Quit Scapegoating)

02. After the bad play call it is okay he didn't man up, instead deflecting blame.

03. You are a "Fantasy Football Player" if you question Darrell Bevell's playcalling.

04. If you do not like Darrell Bevell you live in Palo Alto.

05. Bevell is the reason the Seahawks pounded the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII.

06. JS thought very little of Russell Wilson, until Bevell showed him the light.

07. Darrell Bevell brought Wilson to the Seahawks. Without him we would still be looking for a QB.

08. Bevell HAS BEEN OFFERED HC jobs, he just didn't want to leave the Seahawks.

09. There is no such thing as a bad play call.

10. Pete Carroll never apologized either.

11. Darrell Bevell is an "offensive mastermind".

12. Redzone offense doesn't matter in determining wins & losses. So no discussion required.

13. I was called "crazy" for thinking JS was the main reason RW was drafted by the Hawks.

UPDATE

PART II

14. If you're critical of Darrell Bevell you are not a true Seahawks fan. (Credit: hawksfansinceday1)

15. All sources linking JS to RW are "Myths & Legends" PackerNation is the Gospel.

16. Bevell defenders have experience in psychology, and can help you with your POV.

17. If you like TDs more than FGs you don't understand Pete Carroll's Offense.

18. Bevell has no responsibility for penalties, or anything really, he just calls plays like it's Madden.

19. Anyone re-watching games to point out specifics should be laughed at.

20. If the Hawks have a good game, Bevell can ignore his mistakes, and not improve 'cuz it don't matter. Just enjoy that they won the game.

21. Without Darrell Bevell the Hawks couldn't go to the Superbowl.

22. Unless you have at least above avg talent at every position on offense it is impossible to be avg in the red zone.

23. Moving the ball between the 20s is more important than scoring TDs.

24. Using examples from the past such as Mike Holmgren "makes you silly. Don't be stupid."

25. Bevell is being groomed to be the next HC of the Hawks.

Oboy
Didn't you know it's never Bevell's fault. You didn't watch the Superbowl? LOL

Please show me where I said 'It's never Bevell's fault."?

Don't be obtuse Lymon. Whenever someone questions or critiques Darrell Bevell in this thread you deflect blame on to another entity.
