Dan Quinn

This is a Seahawk topic, I promise.

With the Falcons struggling, Quinn is probably going to lose his job. (Blank has patience but you only have a few more years left of Ryan and that receiving group)

If he loses his job, do we rush in and hire him again at DC?

Our defense is terrible this year and I don't think anyone is going to assume Norton is or ever will be above average as a DC for at least a few years.

Then again, Quinn had a defense lined with HOF and near HOF quality players. We never saw him working with the level of talent that a DC would be stuck with now.

So what would your opinion be?

Bring him in if available, knowing that means demoting or removing Norton?

Hold the course and stick with Norton since we have low talent on D and it does not make sense to expect much more?

Something else?

I doubt it, as Pete promoted Richard over Norton last time and won’t want to lose Norton who has been with him save for his short stint in Oakland since USC

Yes the backend is missing some playmakers and could benefit from some studs, but our front 7 is hardly devoid of talent. Just the opposite actually.

Maybe if Norton leaves Pete would look at bringing in Quinn.

But no, I don't see Pete firing Norton just to bring Quinn back for the sake of bringing Quinn back........something would have to happen to Norton, either getting a job elsewhere or our defense REALLY crapping the bed and Pete firing him.

But Pete's loyal, as we found out with Cable and Bevell. So it takes a LOT for Pete to fire one of his own guys.

After how long it took to move on from Bevell/Cable, I doubt Pete would kick Norton to the curb even if I agree Norton is pretty average. I think the coaching staff is aware the defensive ability, especially in the secondary, isn't where they want to be. So I don't know how much different getting Quinn back would look. He took on DC role this year for Atlanta and they look worse than last year with a pretty talented group.

He certainly helped push an all time defense over for the SB win, something Gus Bradley couldn't do. I loved his aggressive style and rotations. I wouldn't be opposed to him getting re-hired next year, I just don't think Pete has any plan to move on.

Hell yeah. Norton is a decent guy, but schematically he's not special.. He just hold his player accountable.

Quinn is such a huge upgrade for DLINE stunts and teaching.

Allow me to add a "What if" to this topic. Say Quinn is fired and Pete hires him back in some capacity for the 2020 season, then comes 2021 and Pete decides to hang it up. He recommends Quinn takes over as HC. Move onto a whole new candidate or would Quinn get a second chance at HC?

Eh, I would not want Quinn as a HC.

I think he's proven he's a decent HC, but one that's totally reliant on his coordinators to take him to the next level. The Falcons took a serious nose dive after Shanahan left.

Besides, I don't see Pete retiring anytime soon. But it's a good hypothetical.

If Quinn gets fired, it's because the Falcons haven't been able to field a respectable defense since Quinn arrived. They've had a top 10 defense once in 5 years. They've had a bottom 20 defense in 3 of those years. Yes, injuries played a part, but it's important to remember that Dan was the DC when we were stacked on defense, and the year after he left the defense didn't drop off significantly.

If he's fired mid-season; I'd absolutely bring him in. And if he can't get a DC job else where or we can find a role that suits him, I'm all for it. I don't think I'm ready to demote or fire Norton (who is very popular with the players) just to get DQ back though.

Quinn could be brought in as a defensive consultant - doesn't have to have a traditional title/role. Depends what he has to offer. I think the DL is performing OK, Norton is a LB specialist, and Carroll usually oversees the secondary. So no particular spot for Quinn unless Pete just likes having him around.

Horrible D is a bit of an overstatement. We're 14th in total yards allowed at 350/game. Our defense was great under Quinn though, loved him. The question is though, did he make the legends or did they make him?

Im not so sure Quinn was that much better than Bradley. Bradley was not even a point different per game. He only had Wagner and Irvin for their rookie year and the team didnt have Bennet or Avril. Quinn had a more talented and experienced team to coach and it was still Petes D. They both got a lucky break coaching under Pete.

The team tackled a hell of lot better than they do now under Nortons watch

Sign me up, assuming that Dan Quinn also comes with our entire 2013 defense in their prime. Pete and our personnel is why our defense was dominant, not the DC who was just executing Pete's vision.

Pete could very well bring him in as a Special Assistant to the HC. Quinn is very good working with D-Lineman, and I think he is the perfect compliment to PC's DB background.

If it works out some how this year, and Pete doesn't want to lose him in the offseason. He promotes him to DC, and offers Ken Norton the Special Assistant position. It's not like teams are going to be beating down Ken Norton's door to be their DC.

Gus Bradley was worse than Quinn as HC. Teams though couldn't wait to snatch up Gus. The same will be true for Quinn.

That is the roadmap to it happening, ultimately if it does.
