Sherm could get $14 mil. Maxwell, WT3, and Simon all will cost less then $3Mil for all 3.

Earl will be cheaper, something like 9mil a year.

Would you rather Have

A: Sherm ($14m) + Earl ($9) = $23M
or
B: Earl ($9m) + Tate ($7) + KJ ($5) + Baldwin ($3)= $24m

Honestly.... A. That's no disrespect to anyone, but there's certain guys that are so special that you don't let them walk. The Sherm/Earl combo is to our secondary as Walt/Hutch was to our O-Line. You build around that as long as you can, even if it means you take hits at other position groups. This team doesn't rely as heavily on its LBs/WRs and can probably afford to keep rolling the dice on drafting fillers for those positions, especially with Harvin locked in as WR1.

I thought Earl and Kam have already signed contracts through something like 2017 or beyond at reasonable salaries. Other teams will break the bank for guys like Sherman.
On the other hand, there are guys making super star $$ who aren't producing like that right now.
Zach is at 7millions, Mebane @5 millions, Rice @8.5 millions. Those guys might not be back (or back at lower salaries). That's where we can save money. We are still paying guys like Quinn, ... etc.
Not sure about Percy's salary structure ... don't think we will keep paying him , if he can't play.
But the key to keep winning is good drafts. Last year's draft was bad. We need better drafts, much better.

Tom Brady tried to take a big hometown discount, and the Players association would not approve his contract. So i am not sure it is really even upto the player, he can go a little under but not drastically against market value.

ET didn't get extended after rookie salary.

Forgot to mention Chirs Clemons,

I think aside from RW and ET3, our good young underpaid players that stand to get huge paychecks will be paid by other teams while PC and JS reload and adapt. Can't stay relevant anymore keeping the same faces year after year. Fortunately our FO has been top 5 in the NFL at finding and developing young talent. I wouldn't be surprised to see some trades before paychecks come due for draft capital, even though it rips me up to see beloved players move on.

No way they let Sherman go

Maybe they don't, but it would be a shame to

1) Become the Baltimore Ravens and send half our team packing with little draft capital, for a QB I can understand it, but for a CB I can't.
2) Not get some draft capital we squandered on the Harvin deal back so we can keep reloading. #31 or #32 and 6 later draft picks is not going to cut it. We're in danger of being eclipsed in our own division let alone the NFC if we begin to lose the draft race.
3) Assuming we win the Bowl, which I think we do, to make our job that much harder in building a dynasty instead of a one year wonder.
4) Have that little faith in our CB depth which is literally STAGGERING compared to everyone else (Thurmond is considered one of the top 50 free agents available and he's our nickel) to consider Sherman irreplaceable. Which of our backup CB's have not proven worthy? Even Lane filled in for Browner with little dropoff down the stretch in 2012, with teams throwing away from Sherm.

We redshirted almost the entire 2013 draft class because we couldn't find room on the roster, including Christine Michael, Jordan Hill, Jesse Williams, Tharold Simon, Spencer Ware, and Jared Smith. And we continue to strike gold with UDFAs. So, the 2014 class will come in to join these guys. Next year's cuts are going to be harder than this year's cuts IMO.

There's a reason we could redshirt the 2013 class. We dipped into FA considerably to improve the DL and lost nothing truly backbreaking.

2013 Free Agents:

Branch, Alan DT
Hauschka, Steven P/K
Hill, Leroy LB
Jones, Jason DE
Morrah, Cameron TE
Omiyale, Frank OL
Trufant, Marcus CB

This is what we have to deal with this year.

2014 Free Agents:

Michael Bennett DE
Breno Giacomini RT
Paul McQuistan OT, OG
Golden Tate WR
Chris Maragos S
Tarvaris Jackson QB
Brandon Browner CB
Walter Thurmond CB
Kellen Davis TE
Anthony McCoy TE
O'Brien Schofield OLB, DE
Steven Hauschka K
Tony McDaniel DT
Clinton McDonald DT
Lemuel Jeanpierre C, OG
Michael Robinson FB

With 7 draft picks and UDFA's and little to no cap room for the deft FA moves that turned our line into a force? PC and JS' biggest challenge to date by far. Half our vet depth in both sides of the trenches will evaporate.
