I have liked John from the start but his drafts from 2013- 2021 have sucked. His misuse of 1st & 2nd round picks in trading down (dilution) and pissing first round picks away on high $ FA's has been his worst mistake.
As far as team building and maintaining a steady & balanced influx of talent we have been outpaced by the Rams & 9ers for sometime now. There is no bigger truth to that assumption than our offensive line being in such disarray and a having a defense that can't tackle for so long. Not to mention JS engineering an awesome RW trade but failing to find his replacement up to this point in time.
It feels like the problem may be linked to trying to do too much in one draft by trading down & adding extra picks and in trying to give everyone (coaches/scouts/ect) what they want.
Could also have something to do with our scouting, grading system and how that all effects their draft board.
It's like John is the kid with a huge collection of matchbox cars complete with the carrying case to hold them. Problem is, he needs a few hotwheels cars and isn't very good at trading for them. Matchbox cars are $1, hotwheels $3, so when faced with a purchase with money in hand, the matchbox collection usually grows.
It doesn't help that when the stores are closed and some kid has a shiny, but well used hotwheel car for trade, John is willing to pay a premium price only to find the car has little life left.
In my mind JS needs to fix this offensive line complete with an upgrade or two in backup positions this offseason.
This will likely require dedicating our most expensive FA pickup and a 1st or 2nd rounder, plus another mid rounder or FA addition. I just don't see it getting done unless the horse trader puts on a pair of blinders and looks toward the thoroughbreds.
So far it seems like OG's have been undervalued so much that now they are the most important piece of the puzzle.
End rant.
