Now you're wondering why I put this vid up.

It's because I became a Jets fan in '98 when Vinny was QB back then.

I enjoyed the ride and after being eliminated by Elway's Broncos in the playoffs, I thought the following year they'd be the favorites to go to the SuperBowl but then was crushed when he tore his achilles in the 2nd game of the season. They never recovered.

Anyway, I followed Vinny wherever he went and marveled that even when he was in his 40s, he could sling absolute bombs down the field.

The man had a friggin' cannon for an arm.

He also had a propensity for his career in throwing Interceptions though he got a bit better at limiting them when he arrived in NY with the Jets.

He ended up going to 7 teams in 21 years.

Sound familiar?

It should because in my eyes, Sam Darnold is pretty similar to Vinny in that :

1.) Both have cannons for arms

2.) Both excel at Playaction and Bootlegs/roll-outs

3.) Both are prone to throwing Int's, though Sam has gotten those under control lately (still a work in progress)

4.) Both have the bust label thrown on them

5.) Both made the playoffs at least once

6.) Both have been on multiple different teams

7.) Both were very popular in their respective team's locker rooms

8.) Both were all about the jersey they wore, not about themselves.

Things that make them different from each other however :

1.) Vinny is taller (6' 5") than Sam (6' 3")

2.) Vinny had won a Playoff game; Darnold hasn't...yet.

3.) Darnold is far more athletic and can make plays with his legs at times; Vinny moved like he had cement for shoes

Overall, I hope for Sam's sake that his QB journey ends in a far more happier way than Vinny's did.

GO HAWKS!

Glenwo2 - I read an article about Vinny many years ago in Football Digest. It was said he "took little or no credit when things went well, and took far too much blame on himself when things went badly."

I tried to learn from that, in general life. BTW, did anyone else here get that (long ago defunct) little magazine? It was printed on pulpy paper, there were no colour photos, but it was VERY informative in developing my love of the game.

I should've added that both were all about the team and not themselves. Good catch.

And no, I don't remember that magazine and I was born in '77.
