I noticed that Carp was playing LG on the drives which ended with touchdowns not Mcquistan, was this a coincidence or do we see a 'changing of the guard'?? I know he got flagged on that strange play where the flag for a hold got picked up, but it seemed like we ran better with Carp in there and we turned those drives into 7 points (which is most important thing)

The FO has said they like Carp's ability when they can use him in situations to just let him maul. So they presumably used him in the red-zone situations that you describe.

Mauling run blocker ...... unless Wilson audibles to a pass.

I look for this pattern of alternating between Carpenter and McQuistan at LG to continue.

Long term I'm sure Carp is the preferred option. Right now I think Carp is the better run blocker, and McQ is better in pass protection. If Carp is playing even a hint better, by all means they should go with him because the upside is so great.

I think sandwiched inbetween a couple of more 'finesse' type players in Max and Russell Carp's big ass mauling body at LG gives us a better balance on that side of the line.

My reservation is that this is year three of that ongoing perspective. It is possible that Carpenter's future has arrived and that this is his defining year. And .... as a specialist, James is productive.

Play both I agree. McQ seems to be slightly better at pass blocking and Carp is good pushing D linemen around.

I like Carpenter in the run game. His pass protection can be pretty spotty (to put it nicely), but it improves when Okung/Unger have good games next to him.

On a side note, I really was enjoying watching Sweezy play FB at the end of the game. There was a lot of big bodies out there that last drive.

Carp is a good match-up against Justin Smith. Totally neutralized him earlier this year. Don't need to be fast to stop him, just strong as an ox. I imagine he gets a ton of reps in SF.

I personally like rotating them, in fact I like rotating both guards. One really good thing that came out of our injuries this year was to get playing time for all that were available. Now it is not something new when we rotate players on the line. What a nice problem to have.
