Nah, man. I'm just not much of a reactionary. I see people posting his PFF grades from last season as evidence of his potential impact while failing to acknowledge that PFF also ranked him below Baker and Dodson in the offseason. Why? Because he graded out as an elite run-stopper and a liability in coverage.

That said, he could be pivotal in turning around the run defense. As I mentioned elsewhere, a marginal improvement in run defense could completely change our defensive trajectory.

Again, I liked the trade. I think/hope he's the piece that pushes this defense over the top. I'm just a little less bullish than most.
Cool beans. Great comments. Keep it coming.

This must be one of Mike's picks, so let's see how it turns out.

On the surface, it looks like a bad trade. He needs to be resigned next year, gave up a 4th, and a serviceable player for him. Baker was a 3rd round draft pick, and Jones was a 3rd round draft pick, so we are losing a 4th out of this deal.

I don't like it, but maybe coach sees Jones as a key player moving forward. I propose that the Seahawks hire Bill Belichick for General Manager (if he would go for it), that guy always seems to find trading partners, who are suckers.

Titans win trade, unless Jones turns out to be a leader on defense. That's my take.
Looks like a fantastic trade to me!

But you cant make the argument against this move solely based on the POTENTIAL crap-shoot value of a 4th round pick.
If you don't resonate with that viewpoint as a general concept, then consider that placing high value on 4th round rookies is kind of like trying two point conversions. You may not think the reward justifies the risk in general, but when you are down by 2 points at the end of the game and it's your only way to win then you must take that risk no matter what the odds are.

Let's posit that Jones is looking for a contract similar to what another good LB got last year; $34m/4yrs = $8.5m/year (Al-Shaair). He could well play up to that level or even surpass it a bit, but he isn't going to vastly outperform it. Safer, but limited upside.

On the other hand, a 4th round rookie will be under contract for ~$1.04m and is highly uncertain. They could be a complete bust, or they could outperform the contract by 10x. Extreme risk but extreme upside.

The decisive point in my view is that in a league with 32 teams, at least one of them is going to gamble on rookie contracts, hit gold with them, and end up stacked. There will be loaded teams out there (2013 Seahawks) and if the goal is to do well in the playoffs then the only way to compete is to also be risk seeking yourself. Even a risky gamble is worth it if it's your only way to win.

I like getting the better player. I am concerned about the cost. I am very concerned about resigning him.

Possibly another wasted draft pick for one year rental signing. IF that happens it is time for JS to go.

I DO like the player we got.

Roquan Smith is in a different stratosphere than where Ernest Jones is lol
Smith hasn’t played well since Queen left. Someone posted a video of a Ravens reporter saying Jones was a trade the Ravens should make a page or two back.

Just curious, how valuable is a 4th round pick to you? Not stirring the pot, just curious. Mid round pick seems like a fair price to me for a rental who can possibly upgrade our D.

I don't give a shit about the fourth rounder.

Ernest Jones is a 24 year old stud, and this is a very important year in which to set the tone for the next era. If it's a one year rental, fine. I don't think it is.

Contextually, we should note that the Ravens defense under Mac wasn't this crazy great unit until he got HIS GUYS at LB. Queen sucked ass and the defense was not an elite unit by any means until he got Roquan. Roquan is what allowed that defense to become the unit that got Mac hired here.

John Schneider is the GM of this team. That does not mean he acts alone or without input. His main directive needed to be "Get my coach his goddamn linebackers" and he's done that.

The fourth is worth it. It's worth it even if he leaves. It's more worth it if he stays. This is about as good of a swing at a mid-round vet you'll ever see - best since Quandre Diggs. This guy is as good of a LB as Quandre was a safety, and he's 24.

Why would we care at all about their original draft slots? We traded a linebacker who sucked here (100% toxic asset for us) and a 4th for a linebacker who is not only a significantly better player, but also allows Dodson to play a spot he's better at.

Baker was unwashed asscheeks here. Not only was he simply playing bad football, but he was loafing. Unacceptable. Ernest Jones, however, played like a wrecking ball for the Rams and proceeded to do the same for Tennessee, who only traded him because they're doing a fire sale and going full rebuild since Levis sucks.

Titans won because they are taking pretty much anything they can get for their guys right now. They're rebuilding. We actually want to win games, and we're coming out WAY on top of this trade in that regard.

Jones had really good games against Seattle when he was on the Rams. He said himself, enemy number one was Seattle to him. Which is makes sense if he was under the tutelage of one, Aaron Donald—who absolutely seems like he hates Seattle the most out of the division rivals.

The Rams for whatever reason gave up Jones, possibly cause they knew they would have to pay him in future and wanted some pieces immediately.

I have no doubt in my mind and from watching film on Jones, Jones is a DAWG!

Hopefully, Jones, is one of the essential pieces, I'm considering Jones as the second piece Macdonald went after to reconstruct “his” defense.

It’s going to get interesting!

The Rams kind of notoriously don't care about linebackers. They don't really pay them. Probably factored in.

Agreed! A 4th is a solid deal for a good player. The bean counters will bean count. I really don’t care.

Just curious but what's JS record with mid-lower round picks given up on trades vs 1st or second round? I feel like he does better with these types but not sure. Lynch obviously probably being the biggest success
