Thinking nothing bad can or will happen (or has happened) is not hope optimism that's denial. Hope and Optimism is accepting that bad outcomes can, has or will happen but will still lead to the best result in the end. i.e. Forseeing the team going through a 2 or even 3 game losing streak of just horrible on all sides of the ball, perhaps even a QB change, which results in the team putting everything together for a strong finish into the playoffs.
