Are the Raiders in trouble already?

The Raiders still haven't signed Geno Smith, contract negotiation problems? WR group is still very weak, RB even worse, but they haven't signed anyone of note. The same for their defense.

Unlike us, we have signed Darnold and Kupp. They had close to $100mil in cap space, but sat on their azz and haven't done enough.

Touble in the new Pete land?

I think they are building around him, when it comes time, they will offset yearly with Guaranteed signing money somewhere, they know how to load contracts there, they did it with Carr, If Geno believes in himself he will feel he can reach the incentives, they can manipulate time and bonuses like they did Carr as well. They don't run things like the Seahawks do.

It sounded like the whole Geno trade thing was not a well-thought-out plan on all sides, a bit of last minute.

Who builds around a 35 year old QB?

That's what it sounds like to me. The original intention was for us to re-sign Geno, but when his side didn't even make a counteroffer, we pulled the trigger immediately and traded him while we could. If that's how it came down, then it was truly a stroke of genius by JS. Rather than pussy foot around with a player who wasn't all in and wasn't part of our long-term future, shag his ass and get what we can for him.

It's an odd move by the Raiders. If it wasn't for the fact that they are so obviously horrible...the Raiders were 4-13 last season and haven't won a playoff game since 2002...I'd say that it was typical Pete overestimating his team's chances of competing for a championship. The team needs to be blown up, not built around a QB who turns 35 next season.

Honestly, it's clear to me in the last two weeks how many people outside Seattle overvalued Geno. I have always been on record as wanting to keep him, but not because I thought he was great. I thought he was serviceable and could hold down the fort while we sat a rookie behind him to learn. Considering we got a 3rd for him and so-called experts think Darnold is a HUGE downgrade, it's clear they didn't realize we weren't going any further with Geno. He reached his ceiling 2 years ago.

Geno was the man during the first half of his Comeback Player of the Year season. Outside of that, a whole lot of average with some bad sprinkled in. It was time to move on.

Seems like the raiders shoulda went for Sam Darnold, maybe Pete is smart and he is taking geno on his final year and not resigning him

Was it just me...or did it appear, during the time frame you referenced, that geNO took what the defense gave him - short passes - move the chains type completions. And as that season progressed, he started hanging onto the ball and looking for the deep pass - i.e. hero ball type stuff - ALOT.

I'm being honest here - did anyone else see this - and if so was it mostly on geNo or was it due to other factors??

Darnold was a free agent and wouldn't have signed a one-year contract. He obviously had better offers. And why trade valuable draft capital and pay him $31M for a one-year rental when you're in a rebuild mode?

Raiders fans have to be wondering what's going on. The team is relatively quiet during the FA week. THE sole big name they acquired, Geno Smith, hasn't signed a contract yet. Will there be a chance that the Raiders force Geno to play out the one year on his current contract? That would be a huge backfire for Geno, he turned down a $35mil (some said $45mil) extension to join the Raiders.

New Raiders GM Spytek learned from Jason Licht of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And what he learned is that you need to focus on drafting well and then re-signing your own free agents to provide continuity. Lets call this the "Steelers model" where they rather re-up their own home grown players.

The Raiders have been an unstable franchise and the revolving door of coaches, schemes and players(mercs) all has been contributing factors for the franchises decline.

  • Look for the Raiders to add an explosive big WR via the draft that can run go routes and win jump balls downfield.
  • Shoring up the trenches on both sides of the ball
  • Adding more playmakers in the secondary.

Most of the Raiders free agents that signed elsewhere were not really worth bringing back to the fold so GM Spytek is taking a clean slate in year 1 with regards to the roster.

No one had him on tape is what the consensus was.

The Raiders have a poor roster. They're not in the market for top free agents because they're not just a few players away. This is a 2-3 year rebuild for them. They're going to have to build from the bottom up. Geno only solves one problem, and probably not long-term.
