Calling it DYNAMIC, does not make it so. What was wrong with the old system? People were injured for a solid paycheck for years, now we change the game to save the millionaires from injury. Total BS if you ask me. The game is no longer fun to watch.

70.2% of the kickoffs during this preseason had a return.

22% of the kickoffs last year had a return. A staggering 78% were touchbacks.

If you're judging by touchdowns - please keep in mind that there had been only 1 return touchdown in the previous 5 preseasons combined, so not exactly the strongest point if you want to neg the new system.

Personally, I cannot FATHOM why someone would rather watch a ball get kicked out of an endzone than an actual football play, but I guess I'm one of the weird football fans who likes watching people play football instead of watch a ball sail out of an endzone and walk back to the sideline.

HAHAHAHAHAHA

That was good. I just think it's funny. And I'm not wrong. Don't like the game, nobody is forcing you to watch it.

I think the touch backs is the result of kicking from the 35 yard line. If they moved it back to the 30 yard line, you get more runbacks. You also get excitement. It makes as much sense as moving the extra points back to field goal range. A better way for that would have been to make running a play mandatory, pass or run it in for 1 point. No extra points, they are passe'. Why not make it so offense gets 11 players, and the defense 10? We get more scoring.

... and you'll also get more serious injuries, which is exactly why the NFL is trying to change the rule.

Your idea is a non-starter.

Teams aren’t going to screw around with giving KR a chance to return the ball to the 35-40. I bet the rate of touchbacks goes back to normal.

If you kick the ball into the end zone and it is downed, the ball comes out to the 30. So teams aren't going to be trying for that. When the rule was proposed, the penalty for kicking the ball into the end zone was the 35 but they moved it back. It's always an option to keep moving it to discourage touchbacks.

Kickers are trying to kick it into the landing zone, which gives the receiving team the chance to run it out. The ideal for the kicking team is to have the ball hit the ground in the landing zone and then bounce/roll into the endzone for a touchback to the 20. That's not as likely to happen though.

I guess so, it is like requiring 4 cylinder engines in NASCAR. Safer driving, less excitement.... same thing.

Actually, it's more like what NASCAR actually did, which was make the cars faster than they've ever been while being safer than perhaps any car on the face of the Earth.

Cars got faster after Dale Earnhardt's death, not slower. They also got safer.

The kickoffs are now undeniably more dynamic, and they're safer too.

It's a win-win for anyone who likes good football, and almost everyone who initially hated it has already reversed course because it is pretty much objectively a better way to do kickoffs.

While it will take a bit to get used to, it's absolutely better than it's been for a long while. Another angle that will make it better is the field position is going to be a hell of a lot better overall. Which will then likely result in more scoring. Clearly that's what the league wants. Take the Over!
