(In boring, flat funeral rites tone): "And Al Michaels will work another year announcing football games. I'm so bored. Is my favorite team playing tonight? Do I even have a favorite team?"

He's cool. Not "hating" (to borrow an overused and oft-inappropriately used word) on him, just putting it out there for a chuckle.

I always liked him. I thought he was a bit funny in the movie, 'Baseketball'.

Hes okay but he must hate his home life or something...time to retire!
Sitting in front of camera and reading the text off is hard work, I envy
it compared to what I do, I won't make it to 81 doing it either.
I enjoy AL and Jim Nantz but all the rest like Costas, I shut the volume
off lol.

I love Al Michaels. He was once the best, and he's still pretty good. Vince Scully, the legendary Dodgers' announcer worked until he was 88. Although I believe that in his last year, he mainly did home games and did just a few away games.

He's one of the best to ever do it. His voice is one of the classics that will always be synonymous with the Fall, NFL primetime games and classic moments. Frankly, I am impressed he's still as sprite and lucid with his classic timbre at 82.

Like Madden was, to hear Al's voice triggers both nostalgia and a primary signal that it's football season!

Lunga vita ad Al Michaels!

Yes, Michaels and Madden on Sunday Night Footballl broadcasts was an all-time combination.

I don't find Michaels to be boring at all. I prefer that the broadcaster isn't hysterical and shouting that every other play was the most amazing thing.

Still, Michaels had many iconic moments, including the US Oympic hockey victory in 1980.

And don't forget, Michaels was traded from Disney/ABC to NBC for Oswald the Lucky Rabbit:

I agree with the above. He's one of the all time great play-by-play guys, in that class with the likes of Dick Enberg, Pat Summeral, Keith Jackson, etc...

I like Al Michaels quite a bit, but the OP has a point about his monotone and lack of comparative excitement in big moments against other analysts.

I'll always remember his call in the 1980 Winter Olympics hockey game, USA vs. USSR: "Do you believe in miracles? Yes!!!"

But nowadays, and I don't know whether it's due to my advancing age or if I simply have a more refined filter in my brain, but I honestly don't notice or care about most of the announcers and their style. I hear them call the player's names, down and distance, etc., but I don't process the editorial stuff, especially from the color man and the sideline babe.

And that's a big change from what I used to be like. I remember not liking both Michaels and Dennis Miller when they were teamed together on MNF. God, I hated hearing Michaels laugh at Miller's stupid jokes.

Summerall and Madden will always be my favorites. I loved Summerall's voice, and he didn't overtalk. And Madden was such a passionate and lovable riot about the game and its players. They worked so well together.

I'm not a uuuge fan. He says huge wrong and looks like he is verbally abusive to underlings. But most importantly he obviously doesn't like or respect Seattle ever, as a town, he needs to realize he's the old incorrect one stuck in an old NY that doesn't even exist anymore, he belongs in the macy's day parade thats about it.

Father Time is undefeated. I think there comes a time when the baton needs to be passed to someone new with a burgeoning skill set and energy. Today’s young fans need their own Enberg, Jackson, Scully, Summerall etc. to represent the voice of their childhood fan experience.

I think the travel and fatigue of the job takes too much of a toll on someone of that age. Lately it feels that Herbstriet has to cover Michael’s mistakes and low energy with deference so as not to overexpose Michael’s lack of emotion and acuity. There were various examples even last night. Michael was confused on timeouts and he called a pass that literally hit the back of a defender a “drop” by the WR. Little things a more spry Michael’s would not have flubbed.

It’s hard to fire a legend, but it was time.

If you never slow down you never grow old.

Sung by……?
That reminds me of what legendary Florida State football coach Bobby Bowdin said when questioned about his working well beyond his expected retirement, and I'm paraphrasing:

"When you retire, there's only one more big event in your life, and I'm not looking forward to that."
