The 49ers ended up promoting Nick Sorensen to defensive coordinator. In addition, they are hiring Brandon Staley as a defensive assistant:

Interesting that Staley wasn't made DC, and I wonder if having him as an assistant will end up being a case of too many cooks in the kitchen. Also interesting that the Rams interviewed Staley and McVay decided not to offer him his old job back with the Rams.

Sorenson could have been courted and they promoted him, they interviewed a few DC's but Shanahan wanted someone that knew the cover 3 well, Sorenson I'm sure knows it better them most others.
