Well, not exactly. It's good to be in the running, of course, but technically I believe we are tied for 2d WC. ;)

Hey man, don't rain on the parade. LOL! I know exactly where we're at in the Wild Card Standings. It's just that it's only been 16 years since we've had a team that's truly been in pennant contention, that's all. Heck, I'm betting a lot of guys on this board were too young to remember that 2001 team. It's just nice to have a team that's worth investing our time in this late in the season again.

Can someone please explain to me how trading in baseball works. I thought the trade deadline was a couple weeks ago? How are trades happening now ?

Well, in fairness, last season we weren't eliminated until game 160 IIRC. It might have been 161, but IAE we were close. It does feel good to be playing meaningful games in August. Too many years when we were basically out by Mid-May.

Tough road to the finish line, but we play a lot of the teams we are contending with, so we have the opportunity to control our own destiny. On paper, it shouldn't have been that hard to win last night, though it is nice to see some hitting at critical times. I don't rely on Felix any more, he's not a front line pitcher any longer. He can't go 6-7 innings on a reliable basis. Can DiPoto swing a miracle trade to bring in another starter? Good question. Most teams are pretty well set by now. The problem with relying on our hitters to bang out 5-6 runs/game is that hitting tends to fall flat against playoff level pitching.

Don't know all the details, but I think trades can still happen, but there is a waiver system in place where other teams can interfere with any trades before they are consummated. We just picked up Alonso over the weekend.

And all of that leads me back to the roughly $80 million question I keep asking -- should JeDi swing a deal for Justin Verlander? ($80 million is roughly the amount that's left on his deal) I keep asking myself that exact same question because that is a LOT of $$$ for a guy whose arm has a lot of miles on it. He'll cost a mere bag of fungos to get ... but do you do it? Should he do it? Felix's deal comes off the books in a couple of years ... so in all honesty, I'm wondering if the answer should be -- yeah.

That was a great come from behind win last night. What is with Miranda? He has been awful the past month or two. Maybe all those innings are finally catching up to him.

In the postgame, Servais said he was really happy for Martin. The last timehe was in Oakland he got designated for assignment, sweet redemption with the game winning home run.

A sweep of Oakland would be nice, especially with how poorly KC is playing as of late.

Great great win last night and it was much needed.

One thing that I found myself thinking about though is a couple of the HR that just barely cleared the fence. For as great as the outfielders are at getting to balls all over the yard they seem to be below average at catching balls at/over the fence.

I guess maybe I'm just spoiled from years of Griffey, Cameron, Buhner, and even Ichiro pulling balls back over the fence? I wish I knew what stat to look up for HR's that probably should be caught to see if I'm just expecting too much or if these guys need more work near the fence.

LOL, and then the next game Dyson goes back and pulls one back haha. Maybe it was just an overreaction last night. I still would love to see what the numbers say...

Update:
Well to be fair I don't think that one today was actually going out. I first only heard it on the radio. When I saw it I saw it wasn't really as close to going out as they made it sound.

I'm not sure Alonso is a better replacement for Valencia.. I"m not sure he's better at the 2 spot than Gamel.

there is 3 stages I beleive.
1 is he regular trade that we are aware of.
2, A player can still be traded, provided first, he is waived by the team. If no team claims the player, the team can take the waiver off of the player and trade him. If another team claims him before the waiver expiration time, the team can let him go or take the waiver off and he becomes ineligible for the trade anymore.

then there is a 3rd. way, I forget.

I would definitely agree. I wouldn't have him in the #2 hole ... I'd be more inclined to put him in the #6 hole and put Gamel right back where he belongs and was obviously producing most of this year. Gamel in the #6 hole doesn't make much sense to me personally.

And there we have it folks. Can you believe that the M's just completed a 6-3 Road Trip? Given what kind of a road club they were to start this year ... this is great.

Now, it's back home for a key 7 game home stand before facing the likes of Tampa Bay and the Yankees. The Rays, meanwhile have Boston tonight ... then 4 against Cleveland at home ... and 4 on the road against Toronto before they face us. It sure would be nice to put some distance between us and the Rays before facing them next Friday (8/18).

Oh ... and NOW we are officially the 2nd Wild Card leaders for the moment. Whooo!! ;)

Another good win. It was nice to see them score some runs without the help of a bunch of errors. It was also nice to see Servais not screw around with trying to get more out of Gallardo and just bring in the BP to secure the game. I am a little bit concerned though with the BP going forward. I hope Paxton can go 7 or 8 tomorrow.

Good win. Unlike the day before, this is how we should handle a team like the A's. Take an early lead and clamp down on it.

Alonso is definitely off to a slow start, but he was an All Star, wasn't he? I'll give him a couple more games. Gamel is getting hot again, so moving back up the order sounds like a good idea. He has some pop, but really what he gives us is more chances for the Big 3 to bat with fast runners on base. Plus, he's learning how and when to steal bases. He has the speed to do it.

The bullpen, as a unit, has been aces for a while now. But yeah, I worry about overusing them. Hell, I was thinking maybe don't run Diaz out there on a 3 run save opp and save him for the home stand coming up. We'll probably need him 3-4 times in the next week. Still hope DiPoto can pull off a miracle trade for a decent starter.

Be proud we have the best set of defensive outfielders in the game. That catch today by Gamel was simply astounding. Incredible OF group capable of grabbing anything out there.

And when Haniger gets well, we'll have 5 of them. :)

So the final weekend in August all teams will be wearing alternate jerseys and players are allowed and encouraged to put nicknames on the back. Here's Kyle Seager's.
