It adds competition at first base. M's desperately need depth at first base and center field

What a start today! And an interesting morning. A starting pitcher would've been nicer of course but a few more details on this move: http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/2026 ... ell-return

Sounds like with Powell having no future here with our young OFers already set, Jerry figured Alonso could add power v. righties.

Even though he's a rental, Alonso's probably not going to command huge money and could maybe be re-signed this offseason. A nice power upgrade in a platoon with Valencia. With half the bats going a little flat lately, more depth certainly helps.

And Phelps is pulled after one batter with undisclosed injury.

Maybe with the trade for Alonso, they can move Valencia to the bench and get rid of Espinosa. Espy is awful and shouldn't have been on the team in the first place. Alonso > Valencia > Espinosa.

Insurance run there would have been nice. Close it out Edwin.

Glad they didn't blow that one. Let's go get the second now.

Kind of like a mini-playoff game. Half game back, playing them head to head for who's tied for the 2d wildcard.

:2thumbs:

Hope we have a little juice left in the bull pen. We used just about all of them, and with Phelps out, we're thin.

Ramirez was cruising and then he couldn't get an out. This is basically the Erasmo that I remember from a few years ago.

Is Gonzalez or Ramirez really that much better than Gaviglio, Bergman or Moore?

So I just saw that Phelps was pulled in the first game because of elbow discomfort. Wasn't Smyly pulled for his final ST start because of elbow discomfort? I won't lie, I'm a little worried

Their winning % is up to .712 and the Mariners ended with .716 so the dodgers have a chance. If they can keep up this pace for the rest of the season. I hope they don't break it because 116 is the only meaningful thing team has ever accomplished really.

They'd have to go 38 and 13 the rest of the way-.745. I wouldn't put it past them but they'll need a healthy Kershaw. They'll probably rest starters for the playoffs so they likely come up a little short.

It's still bittersweet thinking about the '01 team. 116 and 46 and we choke in the ALCS in just 5 games-and got slaughtered 12-3 in the last game. Made it to 6 games at least in '00 and '95. We had a great lineup, above average starting pitching but not great starting pitching and that's what cost us. And our talented bats went flat against great pitching.

I remember it very well and I'll tell you something, no one will admit it I"m sure, but the 9/11 incident just took the wind out of their sails. It was a much less inspired and different team after that.

Seems whenever Felix has a bad outing he ends up on the DL. Like he has too much pride to realize he is getting older and blames his bad outings on an injury.

We currently have a 1 a 4 and 3 5's in our starting rotation, and calling Miranda a 4 might be generous.

Miranda giving up a homer practically every inning is getting really really old.

Ladies and Gentlemen, your Wild Card leading Seattle Mariners -- Whoooo!! It sure wasn't pretty, but if the M's are going to hang in there in this chase ... they're going to have to outslug their opponents and pray for at least mediocre pitching. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Edit to add ...
The M's have gone 15-9 since the All Star Break -- that's a .625 Winning%. If they keep up that pace over the course of their last 48 games, they would finish with a record of 88-74 (IF they keep that up, that is). It could be a fairly tall order with Felix on the shelf for the next 3 weeks or so. This offense has averaged 4.5 runs/game over the last 24 games and they're going to have to keep scoring in bunches to hang in there. Will DiPoto bite the bullet and pull off a trade for another decent Starting Pitcher? It's going to be interesting down the stretch, that's for sure.

M's tied with Dodgers for best record in 1 run games (19-10). What's crazy is 8 of those wins are since the all-star break.

Well, not exactly. It's good to be in the running, of course, but technically I believe we are tied for 2d WC. ;)
