Looks like they're trying to get him extended this off season rather than next.

Seattle made an initial offer several weeks ago, according to a league source, but the two sides do not yet appear to be close to an agreement.

Some in league circles have wondered if the relatively slow pace could be related to the fact that Witherspoon is represented by the same agency -- WIN Sports Group -- as another star cornerback, Christian Gonzalez, whom the New England Patriots are currently trying to extend.

Gonzalez has sure become ridiculously overrated lately for some reason. Spoon is mildly overrated himself, but Gonzalez is suddenly on a completely different level.

Gonzalez had a legit argument as the true MVP of last season's Super Bowl. I'm sure he will demand a high premium for that, and I'm sure that someone will pay it.

Gonzalez kept this year's Bowl from being even more of a blowout than it was. I haven't watched him otherwise, but I was impressed.

He flat out robbed Shaheed from his first TD as a Hawk.

I don’t know man, I don’t want Seattle to break the bank on Spoon.

He’s a very good player and obviously made a huge impact in the Superbowl, and a couple of franchise altering pass breakups at the end of the NFCCG, but it seems like the selection of 4 DBs including Bud Clark gives the team some flexibility if at least two of those guys develop into solid players to allow Spoon to walk.

It is a business and teams have to plan accordingly but I’ve heard them say that it’s guys like Witherspoon and Emmanwori who allow them to play the style of defense they like. I doubt they do anything other than put in a full effort to keep him at a price they can live with.

Because we have a guy like Witherspoon that it doesn't really matter who else is on the field, his play helps elevate everyone around.

There is absolutely zero chance we let him walk.

Spoon is an elite CB and should be paid accordingly. He elevates all his teammates and helps keep our defense in top form. Gonzales kept the Pats in that game single handedly and I thought for a moment the MVP was going to go to a player on the losing team. Gonzales is anything but overrated. He has had a meteoric rise tho in the NFL. We should pay Spoon and keep this defense moving forward and continue to dominate opponents on that side of the ball.

Players like Witherspoon don't come along very often, or at least you don't get a shot at someone like him every year. So, considering how limited of a pool there is for guys of his caliber, plus what he (and Emmanwori) allows Coach Mac to do with his defense, I think you have to pay him.

and Spoon had a legit argument for MVP too. especially if they correctly scored it a sack fumble that led to Nwosu's TD
He also saved our SB birth with TWO massive plays in the end zone. All while saving Reek from going down as the all-time biggest moron.

Also, this isn't some angry player thing going on. He is at voluntary workouts. This is the business side of thing. Spoon impacts the game in a LOT more ways than the stats. People are way too caught up on the numbers. He brings a LOT more to the table.
