3/$90m with $89m gtd

HOUSTON -- Derek Stingley Jr., and the Houston Texans have agreed to a three-year, $90 million extension that makes him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Monday.

The deal includes $89 million guaranteed, sources told ESPN.

I'm sure our fifth-round corner from that draft has taken note. We also saw Jaycee Horn (previous draft) get 4/$100m last week. What are we looking at on an extension? Kind of surprised we haven't heard anything from his camp.

Wow. Huge payday after missing 14 games his first 2 seasons!
He was drafted at #3 compared to the 5th round but im not sure they'll factor in much when it comes to negotiations.
This is a big year for Riq. If I was wearing the GM hat I'd be looking for his replacement in this draft rather than paying that kind of $. If the work ethic/attitude are as questionable as it has seemed at times I'd be afraid to pay him even if he balls out in a contract year unless his contract was 80% incentive based

He has greatly outperformed his draft position for three years now and is getting paid peanuts relative to his peers. It's time for the team to do right and pay him.

If I'm Riq, I'm telling the team that I'm not stepping onto the field again without a new deal or a trade to a team that will give one. There's not much left in free agency. Jobe is OK, but certainly not someone you want starting all season. I'm sure Schneider would prefer to not be forced to use an early pick on a corner.

He has leverage. He'd be smart to use it.

He definitely had some moments he disappeared last year so im not sure he'd have that kind of leverage
Sitting out a season hasn't gone well recently for guys that were even elite prior so hopefully he uses his brain as opposed to emotions
It's probably a make or break year in MMs mind

If he’s offered an extension it’ll be a lowball in my opinion. Witherspoon will get the bigger payday. Riq is like DK. His market value is higher than his performance value. Ie DK is not Chase or Jefferson but is getting paid like it. If Riq wants those dollars he’ll need to get it somewhere else. John won’t overpay.

If he doesn't ball out this year, I could see John letting him go to FA.

He could yield us a 4th round comp pick in 2027... but lots of stars would have to align for that to happen.

I’m reminded of a Vince Lombardi story I once heard. I believe it was Jim Ringo , the best C in football, that stepped into Lombardi’s office seeking more money. Lombardi jumped up and said .. “ hold that thought I’ll be right back” . Lombardi returned and asked Ringo to continue ..

Then, as the story goes, Lombardi asked Ringo “ why are you telling me all this”? Ringo replied “ cuz yr my coach” to which Lombardo said “ oh no, I’m not yr coach. Yv been traded to Philly”.

Riq is a very rare combination of length and speed but lacks consistency. Maybe even work ethic to the point where sone might question his love for the sport. As suggested , he’s probably going to look to break the bank. But how does either side assure honest value to the other? It’s a dilemma, no doubt.

It’s plausible he may be more valuable to someone else than he is to us. And a change of scenery may do him a world of good.

Man the phones, John. 👍

I think that comp is closer to what will be coming down the barrel with Spoon

Riq is frustrating because when he does something off it's typically very off and very visible.

He also gets to areas where other players in that spot wouldn't be able to even be visible in the screen and does make a lot of nice impact as well.

I'd be hesitant to overweigh in either direction - he's a solid starting CB on a good team - likely even a #1. However, unless he smooths out the inconsistency and improves summer aspects of his game and approach he just won't be in that top tier of guys - even if it does occasionally flash

Tricky your of player to navigate

Ha
Only spoon can get that type of money. Riq needs to change his name back because he’s been Meh since the name change.
haha yeah his play has Riq’ed. Just kidding. I think he is a really good cover corner, but his effort at times and lack of desire to tackle is almost disgusting. I think he needs some leadership around him to show him how to play hard all the way to the end. I heard a cool story from a teammate of George Brett who said he was excited as a rookie to look cool jogging out a ground out, but then he saw George Brett break out of the box on a routine ground ball and run out the play like a linebacker. The player (who I can’t remember his name) said after seeing the great George Brett play that hard he said to himself “I will never jog as long as I play this game again”…. Need leaders

Who is the leader? EJ? Leo? Love? Coby? I think it’s a work in progress

People are gonna miss Woolen when he's gone. They don't realize it now but they will. Corner is the hardest position to play in the league and Riq has done it at a much better then average rate for 3 years.

His 1st year he was great. Then he changed his name to Reek and yeah. Maybe it was a sophomore slump, maybe he drank his own Kool aid and didn't push himself. I think this year will tell the story

Wow. A lot of complaining in here. I guess some fans are never happy.
