I wasn't a fan of drafting a TE that wasn't a PLUS blocker. I don't have any data to back it up but I think Saubert taking Arroyos snaps helped the running game.

Helped, but I really believe most of the running improvement came from 3 middle linemen finally jelling and knowing who to block and what their blocking assignment is.. especially that 76 guyl

Yeah, even when he was healthy, they barely used him. Guess that just goes to show how much they trusted Barner. But still, he'd make for a good x-type receiver/RZ weapon. Whoever the OC is next season, I hope they find a way to utilize both TE's more.
Supposedly he was amazing in camp and had a decent role early in the season. The injury just disrupted his season/momentum. Could be a huge weapon with this new OC though.

TE blocking is crtitical in the wide zone

I am not saying it was the ONLY thing that changed but having a rookie who wasn't known for his blocking to begin with was not ideal. Saubert knows the scheme well and is an accomplished blocker. I also think Walker may have had a nagging injury earlier in the year and splitting carries didn't allow him to get into the flow of the offense.

yeah, your right though, secondary blocking breaks a llot of long runs. I remember we used to have a guy, Joe Jaravicous that excelled at down field blocking and I believe instrumental in having Shawn Alexander break free on many occasions.

if he can even be decent that will be huge because i think Barner is going to be an absolute stud the next few years

It's not just about secondary blocking

How the TE blocks sets up the entire play in a wide zone/outside zone run scheme

I mean, dude blocks entire defenses with the size of his balls alone. Hard to find room for another TE on the field when you have a Barner.
