I thought that Cal deserved the award more than Judge due to the difference in his contributions in the field as a catcher which IMO outside of the pitcher, is the most impactful defensive position in the game vs. Judge's defensive play for the Yankees. The M's pitching staff was the strength of the team, and Cal was a critical component of that staff.
Plus, Cal's team made a bigger jump this season, going from missing the playoffs to falling one game short of the World Series. Cal hit .304 with 5 HR's in the playoffs. I think you have to consider the terminology in the award, ie "most valuable", or where his team would have been without him. IMO Cal contributed more to his team's success than Judge did to his.
But I'm not getting my briefs in a wad over a personal award that is purely opinionated. Judge is a fantastic player and had an outstanding season. He hit an MLB best .331, 84 points higher than Cal did, which is huge, and hit an impressive 53 dingers. He was very deserving of the award. And I suppose that the sportswriters felt that they need a star in the country's biggest market to help advance their trade, so politics might have factored into some voter's decision. What else is new?
