I think the Raiders would want a haul for him. Kind of hesitant as we still have a few holes at linebacker, corner (if Woolen goes at EOY) and guard (the offensive line is looking better this year but the depth is scary). What is the draft looking like for DE?

Hasselbeck and Williams weren't perennial pro-bowler/all-pro players when we traded for them (not "big names" who require at least a 1st round pick or comparable value like Crosby). Duane Brown was and he worked out but Percy Harvin, Sheldon Richardson, Jimmy Graham, and Jamal Adams did not. The exception doesn't disprove the rule IMO. (We were also much more successful as sellers for our big names when shipping out RW and Frank Clark.)

For whatever reason, fans can commonly accept that signing the big names and most expensive players in FA generally isn't a good way to build a contender. However, when those same type of players are rumored to be available via trade, we're still interested despite the cost being even higher. It's wild.

I think it's tough to make rock solid generalizations about signing marque FA's or trading for them. I agree that it's probably not a good way to build a team, but it can make for an effective addition to a team at the right time. Also, when discussing such a topic, criteria is important, as in who makes for such a star player, and what makes for such a successful trade or signing of such a star player.

Sheldon Richardson doesn't really fit the criteria you put forth for such a star player, whereas I'd agree with you about Adams and Harvin and Graham. And you could make a good argument that the Chiefs trade for Clark worked out well for them, as it helped them win two Super Bowls. The RW trade was an obvious disaster for the Broncos.

There are definitely trades for star players that I think worked out well for the teams that traded for them:

--Rams trade for Jalen Ramsey
--Cowboys trade for Charles Haley
--Rams trade for Stafford
--Dolphins trade for Paul Warfield
--Raiders trade for Ted Hendricks
--Eagles trade for AJ Brown
--(pending) Packers trade for Parsons

And there have been big FA signings that panned out well:

--Packers signing Reggie White
--49ers signing Deion Sanders
--Cowboys signing Deion Sanders
--TB signing Tom Brady
--Redskins signing Wilber Marshall
--Patriots signing Rodney Harrison
--Rams signing Andrew Whitworth

There's more disappointments than successes, but some worked out well. I guess it all depends.
