Was the playcalling suspect?

I saw on Brandon Nelson youtube channel that Kubiak was not the playcaller and it was Andrew Janocko.

I also noticed there there were a lot plain dropbacks and not a lot of boot designs, Zone-Reads, etc...

I also saw that there were a lot of series in which Milroe seemsed to check out a bit.

Is it just me, or while Milroe deserves the lion’s share of the blame for the poor offensive production, was he maybe put in a position to fail?

Cruising the web and so many people hung-up on this game like it had some sort of meaningful impact on the regular season overall record. Wild.

Hoe do fans not realize this is an evaluation period for backups and fringe roster spots... This isn't new. Wins/losses, called plays to some extent, don't mean $#!+ in preseason.

Did not know that Kubiak wasn't doing the playcalling.

I thought it was suspicious.

Looked like Grubb was back or something.

Vanilla play calling
That's my whole point -- if your goal is to give meaningful reps for a player to gain experience and develop from, shouldn't they be reps that would be more game-applicable?

We are not evaluating whether Milroe will make the team. Vanilla is for when you want to see if they make the team, etc.

While I understand it's not the superbowl, I just think that we were not close to happy medium in terms of useful playcalling.

Nobody cares about the meaningless game. I'm concerned on a valuable asset to the team missing out on rare and useful reps.

He’s not going to take QB snaps in a meaningful game for a year or two

Getting him any game reps (even vanilla ones) are fine for now

Milroe hasn't had the reps that the starting offense and the 2nd team have had, nor did his receivers and RBs. There was probably a more limited playbook than Darnold would have had, and his timing isn't as smooth as Darnold (or Lock)

You’re not trying to show your hand too much. The 53 was already basically set in stone we had a 3rd string O line in. Your goal is to come out of the game relatively unscathed

It wasn't ideal. If they plan to use him as pure drop back passer instead of a dynamic dual threat, then they're doing it wrong. If it's just for practice reps, then fine.

Notice that there were far more tries on 4th down than you will ever see in a reg season game.

They were testing players and plays to see how they might work when they really count. Checking out situations that they will see in the coming season and seeing if the players and schemes were viable.

Summarizing some of the points made here, and adding a couple of my own...
* Milroe had a more limited part of the playbook to work with, and they were simply trying to get him comfortable with live fire NFL reps
* Milroe already had enough to think about, formations, personnel, protections, so keep it vanilla
* By delegating play-calling, Kubiak was building capability in play-calling for Janocko, allowing him reality-based feedback on how playcalls work in different situations
* Kubiak possibly wanted to focus attention on observing players on the bubble, without the distraction of also doing play-calling
* Kubiak not wanting to be associated with the expected schitt show from 3rd/4th stringers (I personally doubt this was a factor)
* Not giving away info that would help opponents game-plan for the Hawks in the regular season

Honestly, without the Milroe fumbles setting up a couple Packers TDs, the game would have been score-competitive. It certainly would have been more fun to watch.

I did like seeing the Hawks go for a few 4th downs, and enjoyed seeing the Milroe version of the Read-Option and the Tush Push. I hope they do use Milroe frequently in short-yardage situations in the regular season.

Sometimes a bad outing can teach you what not to do so hopefully jmil learns from that
I read somewhere other than hearing brandon say janocko was calling the game too
Milroe had almost no uc plays and almost all shotgun , he will need to speed up to get used to it which is zero surprise
Of course you'd say go for it just to give the kids experience cuz that's what they need but it got a little ugly but hey , game don't matter , give em another try so it'll be completely different come game 1
Just hope bobo is really okay
