I might have missed it in the article. I kind of scanned it. Will this new Hawkeye tech also be used to determine if the ball broke the plane of the endzone?
Doesn't seem like it. I read the article and did a bunch of searching. Looks like it's first down only.

I'm surprised that it's all 'optical'. I thought it would be a chip or something combined with it. I'm not really sure that it will be 100% able to 'see' the ball in all circumstances.

It's like when Tesla took the LIDAR out of the self drive and made it optical only. I'm like "That's not gonna work 100%".

Guess we'll see....

Interesting. I wonder how a chip in the ball would work. Would there need to be multiple sensors throughout the ball so that the exact nose of the football could be determined?

Theoretically you just need one in the center and just use software to calculate the ball dimensions

It’s not going to be used to spot the ball. That will still be up to the on field officials. Once the ball is spotted, it will be used to determine if the spot is good for a first down, instead of bringing chains out to measure. The chains will serve a backup role, in case this system goes down.

There really wouldn’t be any role for this system in determining whether the ball broke the plane of the goal line. That will be obvious from the official’s spot, and the presence of the goal line, and this system doesn’t call the spot.

I detest replay, fire the referees for obvious mistakes. First train them very well, pay them well, and quit burning up game time on constant replays.

Watching College BB, I was struck by replays on fouls and OB plays. Even replays on the time left, which are not bad on the final buzzer. It lengthens the game, and ONLY benefits those who sell commercials and make money on 3+Hr NFL games. I still remember NFL games going 2 hr 45 minutes or less. Even 2 hr 30 minute games. If they want more exciting finishes, use the College FB rules where the clock stops on 1st downs in the last bit of the game... for the Pros of course. In short, make the D defend the entire field, because a catch over the middle with 30 seconds left, clock starts when the ball is placed and ready to be snapped.

Forgot to add, the 40 seconds, per measurement, saved will, of course, be perfect for slipping in a few more ads during the game.

What, you thought the NFL was going to all this expense just to improve the flow of the game?

Pretty much. They’ll still find a way to **** things up anyway.
