Who else is worried about Byron Murphey?

So, honest question, what would his stats have to look like at the end of this season for you to be fully onboard with the pick?
Stats is one thing but considering he was a high pick, 2nd defensive player picked in the whole draft, he needs to be a game changer not just doing his job kinda guy

I didn’t say he was a bust, just a mediocre pick at this point

I think he’ll be ok. I’m not convinced he’ll be a ‘star’ like he was at Texas but, I do think he’ll be upper tier.

Going to stray a bit….hindsight is 20/20. Love Spoon…one of my favorite Seahawks now.

Throw out all the ifs, maybes, ‘he had GA Bulldog teammates”, ‘may have not worked out’ banter and imagine this….we could’ve had Carter which would’ve driven passing on Murphy and grabbing Verse

Ooooooowheeee.

I think this is fair. I spend way too much time festering over missed opportunities . I’m talking about in my life, but it translates to my fandom as well. The time I spend on what could have been takes away the joy of what is.

I can’t help but think that the Malik pick affected JS so profoundly that it reverberated all the way into his decision to pass on Carter. I love Spoon and am grateful he is a Hawk, but I was on the Carter train early. Primarily because for most of his last at Ga. season he was an undisputed, unanimous top two pick until some of the young QB’s started to flash.

Would we have had selected Verse over Murphy had Carter been a Seahawk? Who knows, but I personally would rather have Carter and Kearse than Spoon and Murphy. I also wish I would have bought Nvidia and Bitcoin inn 2014 but I didn’t.

This is a good thread for me though, seeing some of the post and analytics help reinforce that Murphy is going to be a great Seahawk for years to come.

People like to bring up the double teams, but DTs just get double teamed a lot. Didn't literally dozens of them break 50% double team rate this past season? Chris Jones finished with 67% on one site I see, 72% on ESPN's analysis.

I think the jury is still out on Murphy. Last year wasn't a bust, and there are some positive signs, but we can't say he is going to be worthy of being the 16th pick yet. An interesting point of comparison is Murphy's running mate at Texas, T'Vondre Sweat, who was a real revelation last year, despite being picked 22 picks after Murphy at 38.

I thought that was a typical draft guru over-think, ranking Murphy ahead of Sweat despite Sweat's stronger college performance, and even winning the Outland Trophy for best defensive lineman, favoring Murphy's measurables over Sweat's tape.

Carter had legitimate concerns. Many other teams passed on him, not just the Seahawks.

I don’t think he would be the same player here. He was surrounded by familiar faces and a strong support system in Philly. Most of those guys played together in college.

Another thing to consider is he’s surrounded by the most talented DLine in the league. Most of those guys could start for any team.

A lot of interesting takes on this.
Here is another perspective.

Undrafted FA Poona Ford, 5-11, 300 yielded below average results. The defense was near league worst against the run for several years.

#16 overall pick Murphy, 6', 305 has resulted in average to above average play. The run game has vastly improved under MM.

This is where I'm going with this, John needs to make a big jump in his incremental progression of DT size.

5-11, 300
6', 305
6-1, 310
6-2, 320
I think its time to move up to the 6-3, 330 and bigger stage. Just an idea with the draft approaching.
Here is some more maybe now detected sarcasm. It won't surprise me one damn bit if JS takes Dillion Gabriel late in the draft to throw into the competition.

Anyway, size matters. Taking guys with a little less than prototype size is sometimes OK, but the less the lesser.
There's only one John Randall.

Meh. Wake me after his sophomore season. If he still isn't being as disruptive visually as many would hope as our first overall pick in 2024, then maybe. For now it just seems to me that he's getting the double blocks which frees up others to eat. Maybe that's all he will ever be but I think he will start showing more in his second season.

Anyone who actually watched Texas football knew Sweat was the much better player and superior prospect. Bustron had a whole eight sacks in three years and fans on here tried hyping him up as the next Aaron Donald. I think teams were talking him up pre-draft so that their guys would fall. We saw how much he was really valued when everyone else passed.

welp… I guess there is another level of stupid/ignorance achievable, this post proves it. The amount of cherry picking/straw manning being done holy crap.

Since we’re cherry picking shit, my turn. in college sweat played 2 yrs more. Oh and Sweat in 5 yrs has 5 sacks.. That’s what? Byron’s 2023 total of 5? So what Byron had in 1 year Sweat did in 5.. and didn’t even have 1 in 2022. But wait.. in the 3 yrs together, Byron still had 6 sacks.. vs Sweats 3.. then the odd ball stat of.. touchdowns comes up.. Byron’s 2 vs Sweats 1.

Sweat does have Byron beat by 3” in Height and has an additional 43lbs on Byron.

With your logic and thinking (at least per your posts) Byron is better. God forbid you acknowledge that he was playing out of position most this season as well. Or how Him eating double and triple Teams allowed Big Cat To SHINE and play freely like a mad man and succeed. You know cuz football is a TEAM sport. The only “fans” who care about individual stats are, sports-betters, fantasy football “players” and those who like to argue about stupid shit.

My favorite. Making definitive statements without actually showing any evidence or any analysis.

Because there is no evidence that he is beyond average at this point

And yeah double team is not evidence of greatness

I never said Sweat was a big time pass rusher. That isn't his game, but he dominates the line better than Bustron and was the far superior prospect. I did hear on here constantly though how Murphy was going to be a sack master though. "The next Aaron Donald!".

All DTs get double-teamed. Reed, Williams, even Hankins got double-teamed a lot. Lol, triple teams? Why don't you tell me how often he was triple teamed, since you know all this stuff.

And you want to talk about "ignorance".

Murphy is developing just fine. The truth is that line play requires a year or two to be acclimated to the NFL game and have access to NFL weight training programs. A lot of colleges do not have access to such tools and that is why some prospects show big progress as pros. Plus, keep in mind these prospects do have room to continue to grow physically.

Very well said! Captured my feelings to the tee.

Appreciate your take!
