It's not quite as easy as us fans would like. Not so simple as just sign every guy you want. They have a LOT to consider. Esp. when you're working against the cap.

Yeah, the NFL puts ILB and OLB as the same for Tag purposes, which is nuts in terms of how different the pay scale is for those spots, making it near impossible for teams to franchise tag good ILBs.

But the only thing that's going to matter in terms of whether Jones gets re-signed or not will be what he thinks his value is. I think we'd be willing to do top 5 money, but not top of the ILB scale money.

Jones appears to be as good as anybody at play recognition, but he doesn't have the elite speed to command a Fred Warner contract (in my estimation). If he insists on setting the market, I don't think Schneider goes for it.

That said, Philly and KC both have FA ILBs fresh off a SB appearance, so who even knows what top of the market is going to mean right now, anyway?
There has been speculation the past couple of days that Jones is tired of moving his family around favors staying in Seattle and could sacrifice a couple of $million APY to stay

I suspect we will know more after the combine where I am sure Jones agent will be actively researching his clients value

It’s not speculation. That was said by Jones I think right after the final game. “I want to be in Seattle and I’m confident it will get done.” Basically verbatim out of his own mouth.

I hate moving as much as the next guy but a couple mil may be worth the hassle.

Will be interesting to see the deets, but this was as much of a must do this off-season in team history. He's still young, and I think we're gonna love watching him grow along with this defense. Gonna be a fun ride, I think.

I'm guessing it will happen after free agency period opens. Let him get an idea of what his market is and see if we can get him signed after that.

I'm fine with letting him hit FA. I'm not fine with him walking.

I think hitting FA will save us a few mil. I think he's worth significantly more here than he is to the rest of the league and that his agent is trying to cash in on that.

I think he hits FA, wants to stay here, we have the right to match any offer, his agent gets no offers of substance, and we come to a mutually beneficial deal that outpaces his FA market but is also of decent value.

All sides happy in the end.

Nah, get it done before Free Agency. No need to take a chance. I get what you're saying, but letting a guy test isn't always the smartest move. Just like when they locked up Big Cat. I doubt anyone minded them taking care of it before letting him walk. He was signed on March 11th, Free Agency started on March 13th. Much better to get it done early in some cases.

My point is that I don't think we'd let him hit FA if there was any chance of losing him. I think that they've already communicated all of this out, that he's staying, and that his agent simply wants to see if there's a better offer (which we will match if it isn't an outrageous $20m a year).

I don't think he's testing new teams, I think his agent is testing offers and if he gets a higher one, we match without question. But I think its unlikely he does.

Just seems like good faith negotiation to me, but hey, I could be wrong.

-- Even when players might be inclined to give there existing employer a bit of a break, their agents get involved and a lot of that good will goes away. Agents themselves get marketed against by other agents if they let a player take less than his market value. The thing you hope the player can see through is all the funny money. Value in the contract that is unlikely to be attained. Sometimes the contract is written to make it look like it is a monster deal, when in reality it is just a market value contract. Think of a fiver year deal that averages $20, but the largest portion is in year five. Everyone knows the player will never play that fifth year, on this deal, so it is just an artificial inflater to make the original deal look better.

-- If the team values him as much as I think they should, then he will get a market fair offer. Sign it and get to work.

I have a hard time believing they won't do everything they can to keep him if they value him that much.

He's a team leader, people feed off of his energy. Total team guy. You don't let those guys go, esp. after trading for him.
Feels exactly like Big Cat. I suspect they'll get it done before Monday. I totally understand the other side of it, I just don't think it's worth risking letting him test the market. His market is HERE in Seattle, where he belongs.
