I agree that the game had passed him by. But what they need most in Vegas is some culture building and he's good at that for the first couple of years. I think that's what they are looking at, then pass the reigns on.

The Seahawks had been floundering for 10 years under Carroll. His playoff record since the 2014 season is dismal. Carroll built his reputation as a defensive coach in the NFL, but hadn't fielded a top 10 defense since 2010.

Carroll has not had a significant victory in the playoffs since 2014 and since then the Seahawks have a losing record in the playoffs. Despite Carroll's wildly successful first 5 years, he has only a .500 record in the post season. In fact his only wins came against a 40 year old McCown, and injured Stafford and because of a go ahead chip shot field goal that was missed by Blair Walsh in the final seconds of the game.

Carroll also fielded some defenses that were historically bad defenses the last two years.

What makes thing worse is a defense with the most of the same players immediately had a large improvement underneath MacDonald.

Look, Carroll isn't a bad coach -- but he's made some huge missteps over the years. The guy has lost touch with the modern day NFL. He's a great motivator, but he's become disconnected with the X's and O's of the game. He struggled to transition to the modern NFL.

I appreciate what he did for us, but the guy was clearly struggling to deliver anything other than fringe wildcard teams. At the age of 74 come September he's not going to get any better. I can see him making the Raiders play better, but also still missing the playoffs by a sizable margin. It has been a bit like watching a relative in decline these last few years.

I love what Carroll did for us, but it was time we moved on. Also, if the Seahawks aren't doing jack this year, why do you think the Raiders will do any better? They're in a worse position and in a much more brutal division.
I think you got some dates messed up here.

First, our first post-Super Bowl defense that wasn't top -5- was in 2017, not 2014 (and certainly not 2010, which I assume was a typo).

The only defense that we fielded that would've even be considered 'below average' prior to hiring Hurtt was 2019 and we were a top 10 defense in 2021.

Where Pete went wrong was when he jettisoned Norton in favor of Clint Hurtt to try and modernize his D with that failed experiment with a 'Fangio-style' scheme. (Pete made some other well publicized moves that off-season, but in terms of his tenure as our coach, this was probably the most consequential.)

Pete then doubled down with Hurtt and produced the worst D he ever fielded as our coach (and that includes the first year coming off the end of Holmgren-era and the Mora debacle).

I honestly have a mixed opinion on whether Pete will actually be successful in Vegas (though I do hope for the best), but the popular opinion that 'our defense sucked for years after Super Bowl XLIX' isn't true.

We just got so used to a half decade of top 3-5 defenses that good to average defenses felt like garbage. The wheels didn't actually come off until 2022.

Imo it started going downhill when Lynch got old and left. They could never really get the run game going again and the constant misses in the draft finally caught up with them. Let's just see in the next couple years how much of that was John.

For me, the biggest issue was losing talent without being able to replenish. Marshawn was one of them, but many more, especially on defense.

They were never able to reestablish their PC identity as a team post LOB.

If your "gotcha" on Carroll is that he had a winning overall record in his first two stops as an NFL coach 30 years ago, then the Raiders should be on their knees thanking the lord because even that level of success is rare for them.

Not my "gotcha". Just pointing out to you and Tom Brady that he hasen't been successful everywhere he's been regardless of how reputable (the Patriots) the franchise has been or not.

I just can't see a 74 year old coach being the answer for such a team like the Raiders that needs help everywhere.

Pessimism isn't realism. Common misconception.

Is it pessimism believing the hiring of a 74 year old coach that we've had first hand experience with, is not the best path for the Las Vegas Raiders? What is anybody expecting the next 3 years to be like for them? I'll be shocked if they aren't the worst team in that division again for the next 3 years.

If there's one thing we know about PC it's that his teams are almost always competitive.

Unfortunately for Pete, we also know Patton, Harbaugh and Reid’s teams are always competitive also.

I just watched the first few minutes of the presser. Gotta admit, listening to Pete up there hit me in the feels a little bit. It was time for the team and him to part ways, but I didn't expect I'd miss him this much.

John Spytek ...... what a great name for a General Manager.

We'll soon see how good he is at drafting and raiding other franchises for talent.

He's off to a good start.

I think Pete was burned out here tbh and having a dual title did not
help, now he can focus just on being a HC.
This may make all the difference in how he coaches now vs the last few
years in Seattle.
I hope he does well and a part of me does miss him but it was past time
here for him to go.
The loyalty to crap OCs/DCs and players who didn't compete anymore really
got on my last nerve.
I hope he had enough time to reflect on those type of things and has the eye of
the tiger back.

it's too bad Pete didn't get complete roster control. We probably could have gotten a Jamal Adams type deal for Devon Witherspoon

I don't even understand the whole culture concept when the next HC is just going to bring in his own. So what does Pete offer, a 3 year culture rental? I just will never understand the hire.

Throughout his presser, Pete kept saying "John and I" (referring to Spytek). I kept having to remind myself that he wasn't talking about Schneider. 😂

"Culture" has become the most overused word when it comes to these head-coaching searches, along with the phrase "leader of men." 😒
