I think JS deserves credit for bringing Geno Smith in as a free agent. That's a huge win.
He drafted Russ as well. People who want him run out of town are crazy imo.
If he doesn't address the obvious issues the Seahawks have on either side of the ball in the off season are you still gonna maintain that attitude?

Just because a GM makes a few good decisions doesn't mean he's good at his job. JS has also missed on a lot of guys.

We need a GM like Brad Holmes who hits way more than he misses. I'm not sure JS is that guy.

Great QBs lift their team around them. Good QBs can flourish under perfect conditions. That's the category that Geno is in. Much like Jared Goff. Big arm and plays great with an awesome o line and good run game.
This concept requires an existing talent level that is at least serviceable.

When the talent level is as low as it is across the Seattle OL it's hard to have enough of an impact to bring below average play up to serviceable.

Some of these guys are turnstiles.

How can you not agree with him. I've said the exact same things he has for 2.5 years now... that there isnt a QB in the league that does more with less. No run game. No o line. No defense.

And he still finished 12th.

Yet when he gets protection, he's a top 5 player at his position.

But those who chose to see him as a backup will never see anything else.

He had a ball that was intercepted because his arm was hit.

He had a ball that was picked because his receiever was held.

He has had ints because his star receiver mails in the route.

And above all, he's made mistakes bevause he is the most pressured QB in the league. And not by his own doing.

And he is still the only offense we have.

But if he makes mistakes, (and how can he be expected to not make mistakes when he has no No1 wr, no RT, poor protection overall, and no run game to help keep defenses off balance), it all goes straught to the 'i told you so' threads.

The video shows it. When he is protected, he is a top 5 passer. When he is not, he is a top 13 passer. On what universe does that translate to 'average qb'?

And he is a top 5 player with protection and NO running game. How much better would he be than 5th if we had ANY semblance of a rush game?
There are a few QB's who do way more with the exact same issues and way less offensive weapons. Maybe that's the pushback you get a little is because very few teams have all this stuff in place. Maybe guys are putting up monster numbers without a supporting cast. Geno doesn't have a good line or a running game but he has a great receiving group, one of the best in the NFL. Josh Allen has no running game and terrible weapons but a good line. Mahomes has a good line but almost no help in the running game and he lost most of his weapons outside of an aging TE. Burrow has put up monster numbers with a terrible line but has Chase etc.

I think people too probably disagree with your conclusion. "Geno makes mistakes not of his own doing" I have a massive issue with that. Many of his mistakes are exactly because of his own doing. His poor decision making at the worst possible times is partly because of his situation but its also many times him just making a dumb decision.

He's just not a top 5 QB to almost everyone outside of a few select Seahawks fans like yourself and that's ok. You're free to view him that way but many don't and that's ok too. I think we're all rooting for him to play well and he often does.

Any seahawks' fan that believes Geno is the problem must be watching these games with their eyes closed & ears covered, or they are just haters of Geno because, I see a QB that's running for his life and still making plays... I didn't know the number on the pressures and over 10 times a game is a ridiculous amount I'm surprised he hasn't been sacked more with that pressure rate, now I'm starting think he's playing better than I thought he has been this year.. I know the Geno haters hate hearing this but, Geno is not the problem it's the combination of the 5 men in front of him that's the problem. I don't hear anyone bashing Walker lll, Charbonnet because they aren't having a great statistical year.. Some fans need to realize this whole team is struggling right now and Geno is doing everything in his humanly powers to get wins, I mean even Lamar Jackson would be struggling behind this line...
But this is the extreme of the argument. Most who are critical of Geno aren't saying he is the MAIN problem, they're saying he's a part of the problem or somewhat limited. And that's a reasonable take, outside of a handful of guys that describes most in the league.

Not sure he's a part of the problem at all.. I mean it's hard to be a part of the problem when you only have 1 second to read the field and throw the ball after the snap... I can see your argument if he has a solid oline and also had 3-4 seconds to read & throw and these mistakes keep happening. Most fans are always to one extreme side or another, but the QB play good or bad typically is determined by the olibe play..

According this post - , Geno has avg time to throw of 2.4 seconds. "No, that’s not the best in the NFL, but it’s far from the worst. Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Jared Goff, Jayden Daniels and Kirk Cousins have the same average time to throw in the pocket, but significantly less interceptions and sacks - and I’d argue the Seahawks have a better receiving corps. That tells me that Geno isn’t getting through his reads as quickly as other quarterbacks, so he’s taking sacks. And when Geno isn’t taking sacks, he’s making worse decisions with the same amount of time."

What has his last 6 games look like?... Because the first 3 game don't really count... I believe I heard in the game vs the Rams someone said his average was just over 1 second...

The first three games, yes, after those games the DCs game planned against the Grubb offense. Grubb so far couldn't counter that.

That is a heinous misinterpretation of that statistic.

First of all, time to throw is not the same thing as pocket time. At all. Pocket time is a PFR stat that measures the average time to throw OR pressure, whichever comes first.

Neither are good indicators of decision making on their own. They're scheme-dependent stats.

Alleging that the Lions are providing Goff the same amount of protection as the Seahawks are providing Geno is outside of the realm of sanity.

Geno creates almost none of the pressure he faces. This is a good indicator of competent quarterbacking and competent decision making.

How any reasonable person could arrive at the conclusion that the quoted Reddit comment did is beyond me. Just a complete lack of logic.

Too many turnovers. Not enough wins. Qbs make or break a team. People forget that. I don't need to quote any stats. They are overated. Geno has had his chance. Put Howell in. If he fails we draft a new one. Then we will have a team with a low priced qb contract. It's a winning formulae. A superb owl winning formulae. Moreover a qb with the wrong traits will always have those or regress to his mean traits. A generally years long experiment in losing.

You're correct about the data. I referenced the wrong criteria. Thanks for catching that. I have updated my post with avg pocket time data.

Cycling through bullshit quarterbacks is not what winning teams do. At all.

The Chiefs didn't do that. The Patriots of old didn't do that. The Packers didn't do that.

Also, stats are not overrated. They're just misused too frequently.

See 49ers and the Rams. Alex Smith to Mahomes in KC.

Youtuber Brendon Nelson's opinion on Geno Smith,

Do you agree with him?

Totally agree. Even great quarterbacks need some protection to operate.

Geno's numbers are solid as Brendan points out but even a mobile Russ in his prime would fail behind this epically bad line and for that I blame Schneider
