Our offense definitely isn’t where any of would like them to be right now but as I said in the gameday forum yesterday, I was so happy to see them hit the run game harder while behind at the half. Last year I literally screamed at my tv every week telling them to stop throwing so much and use our running backs. We did that yesterday and K9 was a force which in turn opened up some passing plays.

I was impressed that Grubb could make those adjustments and then call the play series exploiting what they did.

Going forward I can see Grubb making his adjustments to NFL talent and speed, it may take some weeks before it's tuned to explosive, he will have to see enough teams to round it out and nullify aspects of how they attack his offense.

What makes me optimistic is he was able to do it on the fly in a game this week, something we been missing for years, teams will try to take advantage of this O line till we prove we can hold up and secondly they pay a heavy price.

Excited to see what the defense brings, this was just week one and they are just getting started.

The mental toughness we showed is going to pay dividends for us. They overcame a lot out of the gate.

No slam on Pete intended but goddamn is it refreshing to see a coaching staff actually COACH their players to adjust to what is happening in the game instead of trying to run the same schemes in-game that are clearly not working. Hallelujah!

Nothing below is really a surprise...more of an affirmation.

Soooo happy to see the ILB's respond and attack in such a fluid manner. Dodson impressed in pre-season but we had not seen Baker, so it was hard to know if he would follow-up on his success in Miami. Both showed an amazing improvement over our ILB performance from last year. Look, I love BWags and everything he did for our franchise. I fully expect to see him in the HOF, surrounded by the LOB and might even get a bit misty. But it was clear that he lost 1-2 steps in coverage last year, adding to the high potential, low realization defense.

Lockett continues to blow me away! We know what DK brings when his head is in a good place and JSN's abilities are absolutely real. But it was Lockett who provided 3 amazing catches, all requiring top end skills, at critical points that cemented the win. Cannot say enough about his value to this team. Who was saying we should trade him b/c he gets no YAC?

200

We have a legit LOB V2 developing before our eyes...but deeper! Spoon, Riq, Reed, Love, Jenkins, Wallace. All playing as a unit and in tandem with our ILB's...this is gonna be fun to watch.

I could go on, taking a left turn on the original thread question...so I'll spare everyone and make just this point: I'm surprised the guards didn't improve and that Fant sucked while he was in. I'm not at all surprised about Forsythe...he wasn't good in pre-season and I knew if we were forced to play him, it was gonna be bad. I really thought the guards would have played better b/c they had a decent pre-season...so that is my biggest surprise.

Can't argue with the LB comment... it was nice to see the middle of the D look stout for a change.

Also, it was good to see how 'sticky' the secondary was, making it hard to catch and allowing no YAC if the WR did make a catch.

The resilience of the defense. They were repeatedly put in awful situations, but the energy and communication never dipped. It has been years since they've flown around like that and simultaneously looked prepared.

. . . since Kam was on the field, maybe.

It was so obvious to me last year it was his knee injury that kept him from looking like his rookie season yet many of us just piled on as if he magically lost his talent. Never understood that.
I kinda believe it was the same thing for Cross last season, that his foot/toe was never at 100%. Hence why he looked like he took a step back last year, and so far (knock on wood) looks better this year.

Exactly the same. Both Cross and Woolen suffered a similar fate in terms of how fans turned on them a bit, unfairly so.

No bubble screens to a wr only for the D to blow up the play completely.

One play, though I did not like was rolling Geno out in the end zone for a play that takes time to develop only for him to get sacked for safety. Rookie offensive mistake.

Very disciplined defense who actually knows how to tackle, esp. in the open field. That was nice to see.
The play calling from the 1-yard line, TWICE, was pathetic though. Shotgun? really?

I get the feeling Grubb and the O had it in their minds that they'd come out guns blazing - be so prolific that they'd be the talk of week 1. And in the meantime. Forgot they were playing a real opponent who would exploit whatever weakness they had.

I don't think they could have predicted the O line would play as badly as it did, but they should have known that Denver would bring pressure because Geno wasn't great under duress last year.

And... hopefully the o line play isn't symptomatic of lax coaching and preparation from a coordinator with his nose too far in the play book, chasing big numbers and not enough in the face of guys, maintaining accountability.

There was a stark contrast between the level of preparedness of the defense vs that of the O. Like two different teams.
