Best thing to me, and I don’t necessarily feel one way or other about the compensation, is this defense had so many blind spots last year that teams exploited the F out of. Mac tightened that crap out of that. No more kitten soft defenses that could be individual great in moments but as a team, as a collective, just couldn’t get the job done together.

The new identity of this defense is gonna have a backbone.

Honestly, the writing on the wall was Connor Williams, at that point I was 99% sure Taylor would be cut or traded.

Help me understand this. I know your posts well enough to know there is probably some interesting and valid thinking behind this sttatement, but I have to admit I don't see the connection. Why is it that when the Seahawks signed a center who is recovering from injury, that came close to convincing you that a one-dimensional pass-rushing edge player would be cut or traded?

He’s not a corner, so I think the move to safety will help him tremendously.

How so?

I want to make clear that I'm not saying you're wrong. It's very likely you know more about Bryant than I do. I genuinely want to know what makes you say Bryant is "not a corner." One thing that makes me suspect you indeed know more about him than I do is that I know the Seahawks have been toying with the idea of moving him to safety for some time now.

The reason I'm asking is because most of what little I know about Bryant suggests he is a cornerback. In college, Bryant was listed as a safety in 2017, but then as a cornerback in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, winning the Jim Thorpe Award for the "most outstanding defensive back" in college football as a cornerback in 2021. Articles about Bryant I can find from 2021 and 2022 talk about him having played opposite Sauce Gardner as a cornerback. The item linked here from "gobearcats.com" (I think it's the official web site of University of Cincinnati athletics) announcing the Thorpe Award calls him "Cincinnati senior cornerback Coby Bryant."

You are correct about his college days, but just watching him play in the pros he doesn’t have the twitch and reaction time needed to play corner full time. He’s got size, he’s aggressive, goes after the ball, constantly ripping at it. Seems to play better from behind than in the trail position.

I’m no db coach, just a long time football nut, but I thought by the end of his rookie season they should move him to safety. I think he is going to be a solid player by the end of this year. Maybe I’m wrong.

Last night, I think Jamie Sheriff demonstrated why Darrell Taylor was traded.

And Darrell's trade opened up a roster spot.

Wagner and Wright were picked when Seattle was still drafting according to talent, not need. Taylor was picked based on team needs.
I'm talking about the guy who Seattle had taken ahead of Taylor - Jordyn Brooks. I don't think we can call Seattle's 2020 draft philosophy a "need over talent" deal when they took Brooks first in that draft.

They thought Taylor was the best speed rusher on the board, and that happened to be both a positional need and a thing that Seattle has traditionally valued highly. It's a mid second round pick on a pass rusher. Every team always needs pass rushers.

I don't doubt that Seattle had Taylor as their best remaining talent in the second round. He fits their profile and while he never developed into a complete player, he DID have some juice to his speed rushes which led to some decent sack totals.
