On paper, I still think the 49ers are the team to beat in the NFL. They have more superstars than any other team, including 9 players on the NFL's top 100 list. But I wonder if this is the year that the 49ers start to slide a little.

First of all, they lost a number of players to free agency in the off season: Arik Armstead, Javon Kinlaw, Clelin Ferrell, Sam Darnold, Randy Gregory and Ray-Ray McCloud, among others. Two important defenders, Dre Greenlaw and Talanoa Hufanga are recovering from major injuries. The secondary isn't very good.

On top of that, their O-line is suspect (and ranked lower than the Seahawk's O-line) and Trent Williams is 36 years old. Christian McCaffrey is entering his 9th season, and has been nursing a calf injury all pre-season. Brandon Aiyuk wants to be traded.

Add the Super Bowl loss hangover to that, and maybe this is the year things start to fall apart for them.

Didn't they lose every game that Trent Williams did not play? Things not looking good for them. Guys that sit out early often get hurt early upon their return.

the good part of drafting Mr. irrelevant - 4 years of minimum salary. The bad part of starting Mr. Irrelevant - a shorter contract than a first rounder.

Purdy's contract goes through the 25-26 season but they'll be signing him to a new one after this season. Assuming he does as well this season as in previous ones (no reason to think he won't), and judging by the average-to-good QB contract signings lately, he'll be looking at $55-60 million a year. Does anyone think he signs for less than Trevor Lawrence?

Whiners have this year and then they enter QB contract hell.

Yes and Trent is holding out for more $ something the media is not focused on.

That’s what you guys said last year . And the year before . And tbe year before . The only thing that would derail them from repeating as nfc west champs is injuries like 2020. After this year it’s all going to be about Purdy and draft success or failure

Lol, yes I did say this last year, and the year before. And I'll keep saying it until it becomes a reality.

It's definitely an important year for them to put it together. Purdy's contract is coming up next year, McCaffrey will be 29, and who knows what Trent Williams' status is going to be. The problem with 'boom or bust' is that it's so hard to make it to the finish line and win it all. So much has to go right.

Well, I didn't. :p

The whiners are the NFC West team to beat, and probably the NFC team to beat. This year. Next year, they start paying Purdy. Or do you think they'll be able to pay the highest paid offensive player AND the highest paid defensive player (Bosa) at the same time?

This is Purdy's 3rd year, so why do they need to sign him to a major contract next year? He could easily playout his contract and then either resign with them or play on the franchise tag, as I don't see him going anywhere unless he completely falls apart.

From what i am hearing McCaffrey is being shut down for the preseason because of a nagging calf strain, the same calf strain that slowed him in the playoffs and super bowl last year. Those things can linger all season, not expecting much from him this year.

I don't necessarily feel like Purdy's contract is what will derail them. It is all the other's that need to be resigned. Like their starting CBs, Hufanga, Greenlaw, Deebo is coming up again, along with Kittle...I just looked it up and they will finally need to start making financial decisions on who stays and who goes.
