If I had to guess, I'd say they're going after bats that hit a lot of doubles. Wong = 24 this year, 32 in 2021

Jon Morosi reports the Mariners have inquired about Brewers 2nd baseman Kolten Wong I guess this means they’re serious about JP Crawford being their shortstop going forward .

I love double hitteres.. Go Edgar!, HR hitters are nice, but double hitters clear bases.. and keep the rally going.

T-Mobile is not really a home run friendly park, especially early and late in the season when the air is cold and heavy. Doubles hitters can thrive here, though. As was pointed out in the other thread, doubles equal more RBIs and fewer LOB. Those are good things. This is still speculative, though. Sounds like he could fit in.

And yeah, it doesn't sound like they're thinking of moving JP from SS any time soon.

The not wanting to upset JP by getting a better hitting SS is “so Mariner”. Tell him “sorry, you’re playing 2nd now after acquiring a bonafide SS. Are you trying to win World Series or are you more concerned about a players “feelings”?

PS by saying “You” I mean the mariners.

Exactly this.

No player is bigger than the team... They should have taken note and learned from the RW3(n'out) situation.

They're not worried about their Golden Glovers feelings. They said "It would be nice if we could pick up a shortstop and move him to 2nd."

To me, the underlying message was: "But if we can't, we can always move JP."

But with no shift, I believe they want JP there for his athleticism.

I doubt they are going to hamstring their payroll but signing one of the "Big name Shortstops."

I don't think DiPoto is the type to get all starry eyed over any player that the media is playing up as a "Must sign!" prospect.

The M's had a pretty solid shortstop named Jean Segura who hit .300+ in his two years with the M's. They traded him to the Phillies for Carlos Santana and JP Crawford. I never liked that trade in the first place. I'd like to see Segura back with the M's. There are better options if JP doesn't want to be a team player.

Segura was good yeah. My guess is that since they decided to build the farm and go with the youth movement after the disappointing 2018 season, they just decided to trade him so they didn't have to pay him. Phillies just declined his 2023 option.

Glad to get rid of Winker and Toro, but Wong isn’t the piece that puts you in World Series contention.

There are 4 quality shortstops on the free agent market, that we’re ignored by this FO/ownership because of price tags. If you want to compete with the big boys you got to spend like the big boys. Day late and a dollar short, Stanton’s MO.

I guess just making the playoffs is good enough. I don’t want to hear about World Series aspirations by this ownership/FO when they are not trying to acquire the pieces they need via FA. …Especially after Dipoto promised the money would be there to make the moves those to make this team a WS contender.

Not one of those shot stops played in this years world series......M's just find the missing stepping stone else where.

Never claimed they did. What does that have to do with talent level though.

Asterisks just added Abreu, Rangers just added DeGrom, Mariners just added Wong. Seattle just lost ground on 2 competitors.

This definitely feels like the organization going cheap again... I will hold final judgement until closer to the end of FA, but not a great start in my opinion.
