As soon as he handed that football to Gronk, I figured there was a very high chance there could be an object secured inside it. The whole point was for Gronk to feel the football and believe it was a normal ball. Having Gronk throw the ball was probably necessary as well, to dislodge the hidden object. If Gronk had just instantly Gronk spiked the ball and picked it back up, it probably would have botched the trick.
It's also possible that the phone inside the ball wasn't even Gronk's but a well made look-a-like that would be swapped again later with some sleight of hand (occurring off camera in this case). There are other methods too, but if the phone in the ball was a fake then that would prove that the guy on the left was in on the trick since he dialed the number to the phone.
