For all you Lane lovers, have a hanky close by...

Maxwell would be gone before Lane, book it.

But Maxwell is actually a good Corner if Thurmond does his standard season thing and Winfield slows down at all. Why would we get rid of a good corner for a good gunner?

I honestly think one of those two is going to get traded rather than released. I wouldn't be surprised by a 5th rounder for either of them, either.

Maybe, but I doubt it at this point. with ~20 more cuts coming, most teams will just wait for the waiver before having to give up something.

^ yes if you are a competitive team that feel confident the player would pick them. If you are say Cleveland Browns you have to ask yourself what are the chances we get this guy where we have a huge hole.......if the answer is slim to none then you probably just rather throw a 5th / 6th rounder vs fighting for scraps later

Am I missing something here? What about Lane makes you think he isn't a good corner? He did pretty damn good as a rookie when Browner was suspended.

Yea, but the Browns are like 3rd on the Waiver right now. At this point, they arent gonna trade with anyone until after the final cuts. They pretty much get first dibs on everyone released right now anyway.

I'm with you Throw. Lane played well when called upon last year. He's slight and fast, but his 'tude allows him to play bigger than he is (like Winfield).

Somewhere along the way, IIRC, kearly gave him a poor evaluation in the preseason, and that notion has stuck. I'm not ripping on kearly, nor anyone else who shares that opinion. Its just when certain posters say certain things, those things become conventional wisdom. I think this is whats happening.

IMO, there's a lot to like about Lane. Maxwell may be the better CB today, but I think Lane has more upside given his speed, special teams ability and attitude. If Pete called on me to make the cut (one of these days...) between Maxwell and Lane, I'm keeping Lane all day.

Negative Pehawk and throw. I already had that analysis of him prior to kearly's review. He was not good last year in BB's absence. I don't know why you guys think this. He has horrible cover skills, both in zone and man.

He's fast, that's it.

I'll post some All-22 gifs later (will take me awhile) from some of his games last year. He just lost out there at times and bites way to early on quick moves by receivers. You can call it rookie mistakes last year, but nothing he has done this preseason changes that perception.

I think Blackmon is a much better corner than Lane and probably Maxwell, but he looked iffy in special teams whereas Maxwell and especially Lane have been lights out in that regard. Seriously, I think Lane might be our best non-specialist (K/P/LS), non-Harvin special teams player. He's a pretty good KR and IMO our best kick coverage guy.

It wouldn't kill me if they released Lane, who I think is exploitable in coverage, but it would surprise me. Pete values STs a ton, and with Blackmon gone, I just don't see who we'd dump Lane for. I'm sure we'll keep six corners. Five would be pushing it given Thurmond's history and Winfield's age.

I feel a little sorry for Parker and Knox. I think our roster might be the only one in the NFL they can't make. Hopefully they get signed by another team, I'm guessing they will. If not, I hope we can PS Knox, who seems like a guy that could develop into something useful for us.

Blackmon may have looked iffy, but I chalk it up to small sample size. In his career Blackmon has 3 punt returns for touchdowns. I didn't beg for Blackmon to be a kick returner for no reason.

I believe you, actually.

This is a do right move for Blackmon. There is not room on the roster, but he still has the talent to play, and cutting him in the first round of cuts gives him extra time to sign elsewhere.

This.

(Thinking Jags or Jets...I think of them every time we cut a player :D ...or the :49ersmall: to a certain extent, but not in this case.)

Not too surprising, although Blackmon showed more out on the field this preseason than I was expecting.
