That’s some great stuff. I’ve been curious about how the defensive stats rank in the last 5 games.

DVOA:

#1 passing offense
#5 rushing offense
#13 pass defense
#18 rush defense

And one of the league's best defenses over the past few weeks:

I'm concerned about the pts allowed. They are giving up way too many TDs this season. They are not even keeping bad offenses under 20pts (Falcons, Browns, Bucs, Steelers, and Bengals). Need to really improve on that. Can't let teams score 24+ pts on them (Bucs and Browns). I'd like to see that number go down to 20pts a game or less by the end of the season.

They'd have to be playing insane to get there. They'd have to allow less than 6.75 points/game over the last four.

The points allowed stat is deceptive. There have been 6 touchdowns scored with the defense off the field this year. If you include the four made extra points and the one 2pt conversion off of these that is 42 points allowed where the defense had no chance to make a stop. That lowers the total down to 251 and a per game score of 20.92. I'm not saying the other team wouldn't have scored anyway, and by no means is this a great defense. They're just not as bad as everyone thinks.

They're trending upward nicely! D-line getting some pressure all of a sudden, CB's starting to ballhawk a bit, steady eddy LB's and we seem to be set at Safety now. Our tackling is suspect at times (like the opening drive the other night) but I see vast improvement and I no longer feel that the opposing QB is just going to march the team down the field and score points every possession. Forcing some TO's has been a nice surprise as well.

I personally feel they'll be even better as we get into the playoffs. :irishdrinkers:

Thx for the breakdown, good stuff. Stats don't really show everything imo. They were up comfortably at Philly, At Atlanta and vs. the Vikings. A lot of points that were scored on them were during garbage time and/or more of a soft prevent type defense. Now earlier in the year? It was pretty brutal at times. Things have really turned around the last 5 weeks. Thus, 5 wins in a row. But to me it was the Niners game that really got things rolling.

Agreed... mostly put up the post a food for thought and discussion.

For instance, we are nearly last in the league at #31 for most pass attempts against, but are near or in top 10 best for yards given per pass completion, QB rating and passing TD's, giving greater credence to the 'bend but don't break' success of the defense.

Trends are more important than the overall season numbers. Season numbers aren't great maybe, but key stats have been trending upwards in the 3rd quarter of the season, and will hopefully continue upward in the 4th and into the playoffs.

Agreed. If I could figure out how to look at all teams/games for the last 4 weeks I'd do that, but alas, I cannot.

We need all the improvement that we can have, our next few games are very tough and no room for mistakes.
