Let's go backward.
We were supposed to suck. 'Get the 1st pick in the next draft' type of suck.
Against almost all predictions, Geno produced in ways few expected. Instead of a near no win team, we piled up wins last year.
Then we went into another year, and somehow people expected us to compete for what? Certainly not the division, SF was supposed to run away with it. SF predictably stumbled when they lost Deebo & Trent (and stop stumbling when they got them back). But this was still going to be their division.
Did you really expect Geno to produce at this crazy level he never had before? Of course that ridiculous veering off Geno's average had to adjust. Geno is flawed. Pete is good at getting the best from players, but he doesn't remove weaknesses. Geno cannot carry a team consistently, though he can inconsistently.
This is a barely playoff team because we have a strong offense. Our secondary is somehow worse, probably because last year we picked off the ball more. (We probably still have better pieces in the secondary this year.) Our LB group is still garbage, though less garbage because a 93 year old Bobby is still making plays at the line. Our OL is better, but only on paper because the key pieces are injured. The DL looks better, but again the results are wanting.
Either way, is this a playoff-contending caliber roster? It might be a 'squeak into the playoffs' type of roster, but expecting wins in the playoffs with this roster seems unreasonable.
Great teams and outstanding teams are usually consistently good. This team has moments of being good, but is inconsistent - the hallmark of a team that doesn't belong in the top tiers. We are barely in the top half for that reason.
Still, we were supposed to be much worse. It feels more weird that people seem that upset about a team not producing as well as last year when last year was a complete anomaly. Nobody should expect this team to be that good, because we don't have the roster to expect it.
