Trying to hit downfield doesn't bother me. But, it looks like we might have the wrong wideouts/TE for this tactic. If they want to keep slinging the ball downfield, they would be better with 4 Joe Jurevicius or Marcell Reece types, over what they've got now. It's not speed and separation that makes this scattershot passing approach work; it's one on one matchups where the receiver will successfully fight for the 'jump ball'.

Even though he didn't quite have the dimensions for this style, Tate kind of brought this ability to fight for the ball. The thing is, he bacame too expensive.

So, the idea is to load up through the draft, with big targets with great catching ability/physicality. Speed is an afterthought.

Come to think of it, for as many drops as he had, Kearse did kind of fit the mold, too.

Russell used to be more accurate downfield. With Russell's decreasing deep accuracy, having receivers who can really fight for the ball would be a big help. The only thing Russell would have to do, would be to stop with the overthrows. He could basically be left/right/short with the passes, with the idea of hucking it downfield, in the area of a given coverage mismatch.

Honestly, even though he's not the biggest target, P-Rich looks like the guy who fights hardest for the contested pass. Graham seems 'lost in space' half the time, and Baldwin is great at getting open, but maybe not a physical guy when it comes to ripping the ball out of a contested grasp.

But 4 Marcel Reeces, or 4 Joe Jureviciuses, and this offense would be lit. These are the kinds of targets where, you can get the pass into their vicinity, anywhere, anytime, and they're going to get the catch. Plus, this kind of player is great for blocking in the running game.

Speaking of which, a running game would be a great help, too... maybe with a platooning of a few big (250+ lb) backs, spelled by McKissick/Prosise types here and there.

imo...
