Using a statement like "this is the stupidest thing I've ever read in my life" tells me you mean to be rude.

I knew it would sound rude but I really didn't mean for it to be. It really was stupid.

Avril even said in his interview with Softy that he couldn't imagine playing much LB. The thing he does is rush the passer.

Lets not forget that we still have another "DE" in Big Red. I see us starting out base with Avril, Mebane, Branch(if resigned) and Red on the end. I still don't think that Clem will be ready by Sept, so in passing downs sub Irvin for Red.

If people get the chance, check out Seahawks.com for the phone press conference video of Avril with the media and also Pete and Johns latest phone press conference.

From what I've gathered listening to those two videos is that Avril is to be the Day 1 starting LEO as Clemons recovers and because Irvin still has a way to grow, though they still really like him as a specialist for now.

For whoever asked above, left defensive end is the LEO position and the position Avril played at Detroit the last two years, though he did play Right defensive end (Red Bryant's position) his first two years there, so he's versatile and does have the skillsets to do some of the drop in coverage stuff that Carroll has had Clemons and Irvin do.

But he made it pretty clear. He's a pass rusher first and unless Irvin beats him out, he's the new starting Leo.

Well wasn't it Quinn that moved Red to the 5 T, I would not rule out creative packages that sound stupid now but look like a Stephen Hawkings design later.

Listen to those conference calls again. While Pete did say that they didn't want to rush Clem back, he was clear that the Avril signing would not affect Clem's position at all... I take that to mean that Clem is still the LEO. He also specifically says that Avril dropped back a bunch and played linebacker. So while rushing the passer is what Avril does best, I can still envision him as a capable WILL especially given how much flexibility the secondary allows. We can be very aggressive with our front 7.

With the addition of Bennett and Avril to Irvin and Clem given we have Mebane , Bryant, McD, Howard and Wade if we were to a add a big body 5 tech we could switch hard to a 3-4 scheme as we have the rush backer s here and enough depth with the remaining LBs to make the switch.

LEO is RDE going against the LT. 5tech is LDE or Red's position. Avril played the LDE almost exclusively in Detroit. Before that he played LB . . . Poorly.

NICKEL

LEO: Bruce Irvin
3-T: Chris Clemons
1-T: Brandon Mebane
5-T: Michael Bennett

Will: Cliff Avril
Mike: Bobby Wagner
SAM: KJ Wright

That's great and all, but in the nickel defense, a LB is taken off the field for an extra DB.

And typically it is the Will . . .

And here we go again. I'll never understand why fans want the team to switch from a defense that works pretty damn good to some other scheme, just because it is that scheme.

Our D works pretty well as it is. I don't see any "hard" switch to a 3-4 or any other base scheme. The scheme we have uses some of the best features of the 3-4 and the 4-3, with a really, really good secondary. On the other side of that, the whole 3-4/4-3 argument is more for the pundits to have an easy description to use in their rambling missives. Hardly any team in the league uses a pure version of either scheme, and all teams make situational adjustments to counter opponents moves and to fit what's currently happening on the field.

Why fix what ain't broke? We're adding good players, players that Pete and John think will fit our scheme and make the team better without any major tweaks to the base scheme.

I'm not advocating any change at all, but simply trying to make sense of the reality that at some point the team could have 4 pretty capable pass rushers and it would be smart to have 2 on the field at any point in time which might occur more in pure 3-4.

Quinn is an innovative DC so changes might be more than simply situational. I'm only just sayin'.

What are you guys even talking about? It's not a possibility at all even.

Somebody humor me and list all of the things that the base D WLB does in the Seahawks offense, then list what Cliff Avril's strengths are, finally compare the two lists.

Carroll is refering to the need for a LEO to drop into coverage from time to time in support of zone blitz schemes. Big difference between that and actually playing linebacker. Avril signed to compete at LEO.
