I’m curious to see what folks think of Murphy so far in his rookie season. I remember when Cortez came out and showed a lot of promise his rookie year and absolutely blow up the league in year two. Hoping for something in the same stratosphere as that for Murphy.

Thoughts?

He may not have the best stats, but he’s drawing many double teams and allowing others to be free. I’m also curious about the defense stats in games he’s played compared to when he was out.

Agreed
Murphy has to be accounted for when he is in there. I believe that he will take a couple steps forward next year. I'm very much still happy with the pick.

I think … IMO our losses where he was out injured showed how much our Dline needs him. and next year he’ll be even more of a beast. 1st time we played SF we didn’t have him, this time we did and CMC met him quite a fee times iirc, each replay the showed I saw big 91 there on CMC

Happy so far. We definitely missed him when he was out injured. He's a force that can penetrate and disrupt, something we've needed on our D-line for a while. Can't wait to see him and Nwosu together. I hope we get the chance some day.

It is a rare event when a rookie achieves full potential right out of the gate. Murphy has proven that he has immense potential and out opponents have taken note by working double teams on him on a regular basis. Despite that Murphy has clogged his gap/s and made plays while creating playmaking opportunities for his teammates. You just can't ask for more than that. I am so looking forward to what he does in the future, but am very pleased with the positive impact he has already produced for this team.

I guess positions like this aren't the super noticeable spots like others unless putting up some run stuffing or sack numbers. Never see him doing anything bad either. Would I be wrong in saying I don't notice him that much?

Worthy every penny to a team defense mindset. Look no further than when he was out for three games. That defense was getting blown up! Glad he is a Seahawk!

I would put it this way. Its hard to have the intimidating, killer mentality we had with the LOB when your D Line is getting beat at the LOS repeatedly. It begins to matter less whether you've got dogs at LB or DB if you lose the physical fight / battle of wills in the trenches.

With Murphy in, whether he shows up on the stat sheet or not, you can see and sense that more often than not we are engaged in a war at the LOS and more and quite often, winning the battles that happen there. Where for the last 8 or so years, you would slowly see us wearing down across the line, now, you are beginning again to see our guys getting movement into the backfield quite often and especially later in games.

He may not being popping off the stat sheet yet, but he is absolutely changing the tenor of the battle in the trenches and giving us an edge against opponents, even if ever so slight.

Very happy with him, oppositions are scared of him (hence double teams) and the defence is notably worse when he isn't there. If it was coaching staff rather than the press that voted for DROTY I reckon he would be a if not the front runner.

A minor point but one that I believe should be made due to the comparison being made... it was actually year three that Tez blew up the league.

In year one, he had 1.0 sack... in year two, he had 6.5... and in year three, he had 14.0, a MAJOR step forward.

So, I'd say that Murph is off to a real good start with 0.5 sacks, 2 TFLs, and 1 QB hit thus far and the routine double-teaming that others have mentioned.

(TFLs and QB hits were not being recorded when Tez was active.)

This. He isn't making Sportscenter every week, but his measures are there. It's hard to see what he brings unless you are really paying attention.

It's more a stat heavy spot, but it is noticeable when he is on the field vs not

I've had times where I've made him someone to just watch and he's consistently disruptive and sometimes just a complete handful

He'll continue to get better and stronger, but have zero complaints or concerns on the pick - I think they hit one

Murphy doesn’t need to be the second coming of Aaron Donald’s (though if he did I’m not complaining), but he just needs to be a presence. If the offense is aware he’s there and needs to game plan for him which means pulling a guard or some other double team then he’s doing his job well.

His presence may not show up on the stat sheet but his presence definitely elevates the play of everyone around him. Great pick at number 16

Yes, you are correct. For some reason, I thought it was year two but it was year three in 1992. I remember every year I used to get pro football weekly magazine and Joel Buchsbaum who was probably the best NFL talent evaluator outside of the NFL would do a write up of the top 20 or so players at each position. He was typically pretty critical so it was really really hard to get a top score and top comment. After the 1992 season for Cortez all he had was one word “awesome”. That was probably the best comment I’ve ever seen him make on any player he had evaluated. That season four Cortez Kennedy and that defense was truly special. As good as the 2013 team was, that defense would’ve given the 2013 team a run for their money. Couple that with Seattle having probably the worst offense ever for any team that year.

In my eyes, Murphy is progressing nicely. Johnathan Hankins has been a bargain contributor on the nose and shaded. But going forward, the team needs to add a couple of two gap tackles. That enhances the flexibility of multi-position deployments in support of Murphy's growth and development and impact.

It's a process.

I think he's doing great. Double teamed constantly so he's not going to show up on the highlight reel, but I feel he's still a disruptive force that allows those around him to be single coverage. Of course I'd like to see more penetration to disrupt the play (i.e. stuff the running back behind the line of scrimmage or sack the QB) but I think overall he's doing well.
