I completely disagree with the author's assertion that Russ plays down to his competition. It's pretty obvious this guy has not closely followed the Hawks. He mentions the St. Louis game without talking about the Rams' two monster edge rushers or the injuries to Seattle's offensive line. If anything, Russ has kept us in several games we might have otherwise lost by keeping plays alive with his legs and remaining steady in spite of the abuse he's taken behind a decimated o-line.

It's like the writer ignored this week.

Ignores the Jags.

Also the Texans were 2-1 when we played them. So yeah, 2 win texans, who had a winning record until we broke Matt Schuab.

That same interim QB in St Louis managed a pretty dominant win in Indy this week.

So we played down to to Tampa. And even that didn't have much to do with Russ. He did have the bad pick, but other than the flurry of scoring in the second quarter the team was pretty stable. O-line ugly in both Stl and this one.

good article. Kaep is the most overrated player in the NFL, IMO. He's a media creation. The media last year wanted so badly for the 49ers (one of the elite franchises) to have a franchise QB, so they were all over his jock the entire last half of the year. Kaep's had 2 gigantic- both against the same HORRIBLE Green Bay Packer's defense that is completely befuddled as to how attack him.

It's unbelievable, He throws for 400+ yards with scrubs at WR and Vernon Davis, and has only hit 200 1 other time, That should illustrate how terrible GB's pass defense is.

He locks onto players, his completion % is pedestrian, and he has a HIGH wind-up. Which telegraphs where he's going. I'll be very interested to see if they can be successful and keep up with the Saints high powered offense.

To be honest, there was always a lot of potential with Kaepernick, but a big need to polish his throwing motion dating back to as recent as last preseason. He never looked any better than Smith until he started his first game. Seeing Kaep dominate against Chicago was as much surprise to Niner fans as it was around the league.

The coaches fixed a lot in his mechanics but it seemed he arrived at an ideal time mid season to take advantage of defenses. He had the luxury of the best receiving corps the 49ers have had in a decade.

I think what's also interesting is the mental aspect of it too. Last year, no pressure at all as the backup, everything is good. Pistol, read option also no worries.

Now, he's the clear starter and the run stuff has gotten mixed messages from the coaching staff. Maybe it's gotten to his head. This sorta stuff messes with QBs all the time (griffin).

So it appears that the 49ers offense was successful despite CK last season or they are mismanaging him and the game plan.

I think the truth is a combination of everything. The reliance on Crabtree was huge last year, let's see what happens when he gets back.

Holy cow. A very objective post from nine star. Thanks. It is refreshing to read an honest opinion and I agree that getting Crab back could change everything espeacially if VD and Boldin are both on the field.

Nice post NINEster. Kaepernick wasn't considered NFL ready out of college, he was a project that needed some polish.

He'd rarely taken snaps under center in college and had virtually no experience with an NFL offense. Smith's contract was good enough to keep him through that year and one more year (if I remember correctly) which would've given Kaepernick a little more time to work on stuff.

Intangibles many times make a QB. Kaep is going through some adversity right now. It's time to see if he can work through it and how it effects him. The end of this year and next year will determine if he's gonna make it or if the Niners need to go back to the drawing board. I see QBs in the league having shorter leashes now due to the dearth of QBs coming out of college and producing right away.
