Clock. running a play burns more clock by a few seconds.

Yeah… but so would have a fg attempt, a kickoff play, etc.

That was a head scratcher. I guess PC did not want to run up the score. Roll eyes! But even more puzzling is throwing the out pattern that led to going out of bounds stopping the clock.

Actually, the clock would stop for the turnover on downs anyway.
