In 2011 Kam took the SS position as an unknown and ran with it to the Probowl
In 2012 Sherman turned a strong late season the previous year into an Unexpected All Pro second year.

Which 2nd or 3rd year player stands the best chance of having a similar impact in 2013?

Going with Jaye Howard. I'm hoping for improvement playing for his college coach.

Sherman was an unexpected All-Pro?
He's been playing at All-Pro level since his first start against the Bengals.

I would say if any second year player stepped up last year it'd have to be third year player Golden Tate. Sure he wasn't All-Pro or even Pro-Bowl, but no receiver gets enough targets in our system for that. Tate was playing at a Pro-Bowl level when called upon though.

This year it's gonna be Doug Baldwin getting back to his best and putting up yardage close to his rookie year, despite being the 4th receiver on the depth chart.

Lane showed potential at times. I would like to see him play more in the nickel though. I think he will be the 5th member of the LoB

Hopefully all of them, but I went with Sweezy, after having a full year/offseason to learn the position. It would be nice if Russ didn't have to scramble like a mofo ALL the time. :D

Good topic!

I'm torn between Lane, Scruggs and Smith, but I think Malcolm is going to take the starting job in camp and will own it all year. Maybe not up to pro bowl level, but he'll do pretty damn good as starting Will. Though I can also really see Lane stepping up as the nickel corner too if T3 is still hurt.

I'm voting Jeremy Lane. I really want to see him get some more playing time. I think he might be as good or better than Browner.

Wagner started but I see him elevating to another level. Him or whoever replaces Branch.

Voted Scruggs simply because I think the team could really use him to be a beast while Clemons is out, and the newbies will need a little extra time to adjust to the new system.

Hoping all of them take huge steps going into this upcoming season.

Josh Portis . . .

On a serious note - Walter Thurmond @ Nickel, and from the new additions: Michael Bennett

How about ALL OF THE ABOVE! I see each of those players contributing on a larger scale this year.

This is Malcolm Smith, Byron Maxwell, Walter Thurmond's - make or break year. If they don't progress significantly or stay healthy than they won't be with us in SEPT or in 2014.

Meanwhile this is a big year for John Moffitt and James Carpenter. Both have been hobbled with injuries. I think Carp has more upside hopefully he can lock down the LG spot for years to come.

As for the young 2nd year players I see Lane, Guy in the secondary playing a bigger role. I see Sweezy giving Moffitt a run for his money, I think Howard will contribute significantly, but I think it'll be SCRUGGS who has the biggest growth from year 1 to year 2.

Carpenter. He stays healthy and becomes a legit 2nd tier left guard.

I think we'll see improvement from Wagner for certain as he gets more familiar with reading offenses, but I would really like to see Scruggs step up.
