Sam Darnold claims his first victim: Kwesi Adofo-Mensah fired as GM of the Minnesota Vikings. Not sure how much this was based on letting Sam go, and then see him get to the Super Bowl, but I'm sure it didn't help.

Bit late in the calendar to be firing someone, isn’t it?

The Viking played the odds going with McCarthy over Darnold. The GM and coach generally make draft decisions, so each had skin in the game when the Vikings failed and Darnold succeeded with us. McConnell and Odofo-Menso both had two huge seasons with Cousins and Darnold, and were both there for the two down years. My guess is that with someone having to take the fall, HC's are currently at more of a premium, and McConnell is pretty good.

I think the Vikings had a game with negative yards passing this year. I’m sure Sam had a lot to do with the firing. That, and the fact everyone who isn’t a Michigan fan, knew JJ had never shown he can win games on his own. And was a prime flop candidate.

Plus they passed on Nix, who made the AFC title game and would have been in the Bowl if not for an injury. Didn’t trade up for Maye or Daniels.

Oh, and they had Daniel Jones, who looked great before getting hurt in Indy

I’m sure it was a big factor. The Vikings organization looks like a bunch of morons with Sam going 14-3 again AND making it to the Super Bowl this year.
Yeah, the timing of it suggests that Darnold making it to the Super Bowl played a role in the decision.

Vikings were #1 in free agency spend last offseason at $270 million in contract value. So ownership allowed him to go all in without the QB to justify it.

Don't think it was Sam alone that got him fired but letting both Sam AND Daniel Jones walk who played really well at the Colts.

I think I read they let Sam walk as they thought they were keeping Jones only to get outbid.

It's pretty clear what was holding the Vikings back this year, and that it was a self-inflicted wound, however the reasonings for it may have been arrived at. They put all their eggs in the McCarthy basket this season, and gave themselves almost no wiggle room for error. They never pursued Rodgers as a bridge QB, and they saw both Darnold and Jones achieve success with other teams. And I'm sure they've got some disenchanted players on their team whose production suffered as a result. John Jefferson comes first to mind.

Still, I hope they have someone with vision in mind to take his place, or else it will look like another one of those someone's got to take a fall for this kind of things.

Missing the playoffs with a 9-8 record isn't a disaster, especially considering the divisional opposition. Ultimately the regular season record doesn't matter. It's about meeting or exceeding fans' expectations, and Vikings fans wanted playoff success.
